James Gunn Says Return of Original Guardians 'Always a Possibility'

When James Gunn finishes his Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, the director could helm a film featuring the original Guardians - if Marvel will allow it. Gunn revealed in an interview that there have been discussions of making a movie with the team, but if it were to happen, it would be called The Ravagers.

Gunn isn't the only person involved in the Ravagers who's eager to see the team return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Smallville star Michael Rosenbaum, who played Ravager member Martinex in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, has said that he hopes to be in another MCU project in the future.

In a conversation with Collider, Gunn, who has already directed two Guardians movies, talked about his plans for a third Guardians film and also spoke about a potential spin-off. Gunn revealed that he would be interested in doing more with the original Guardians of the Galaxy (known as the Ravagers in the MCU).

Gunn clarified that the movie wouldn't be titled Guardians or Guardians 3000, which suggests that Marvel and Gunn would rather Star-Lord's team remain the MCU's original Guardians. Instead, the film would be called The Ravagers. Gunn says he would be "excited" to make the film. As for the chances of the movie actually happening, Gunn says "it's always a possibility."

Having both Gunn and Rosenbaum on board could help The Ravagers see the light of day, but what about Sylvester Stallone, who plays Stakar, the leader of the Ravagers? According to Gunn, Marvel has big plans for Stallone's character which were never limited to just Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. It's possible that those plans could extend to another space movie like The Ravagers. The other Ravagers who were established in the post-credits scene alongside Stakar and Martinex are Charlie-27 (Ving Rhames), Aleta Ogord (Michelle Yeoh), Krugarr, and Mainframe (voiced by Miley Cyrus).

Such a movie could also give fans an opportunity to see more of the fan-favorite character, Yondu (Michael Rooker), in the MCU. Yondu could appear via flashbacks, considering that he had close ties with Stakar and the others, back when he was alive.

The Ravagers would be new territory for Marvel Studios, especially since this would be an MCU-original property. Prior to the introduction of the Ravagers in Guardians of the Galaxy, there was no group by that name in Marvel Comics. However, the characters are far from "new," as several of them were introduced in the 1960s. The only two major members of the original team who have yet to appear in the MCU are Vance Astro and Nikki, who could finally get their live-action debut in The Ravagers
