DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn asks fans what new DC characters they want to see on screen as the DC Universe continues. Warner Bros. Discovery announced the hiring of Peter Safran and James Gunn to run DC Studios a few weeks ago. They have only been on the job since the beginning of the month, but there have already been teases of what will come next. The co-CEOs already reaffirmed that Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and Harley Quinn are key to the DCU's future. The creative duo is also looking to put their stamp on the universe by bringing new heroes to the screen.

As James Gunn and Peter Safran begin figuring out what movies will be part of the DCU's 10-year plan, the Peacemaker and The Suicide Squad director is asking fans for their input. James Gunn recently launched a new social media profile on Mastadon, and his latest post asks "Which DC character/s who hasn’t yet had their own film do you want to see most on the big screen?" The question is another example of Gunn keeping tabs on fan interest. His post was met with many replies from Mastadon users calling for Batgirl, Nightwing, Martian Manhunter, Plastic Man, Booster Gold, Poison Ivy, and more DC characters to appear in future DCU movies.

James Gunn Can Usher In A New Wave Of DCU Heroes

Regardless of if James Gunn takes any of the suggestions to heart, the social media post shows his interest in ushering in a new wave of DCU heroes. There have been DC movies for decades, but the majority of them focus on Batman and Superman. Gunn is an avid comic fan and is well aware that DC's comics include a variety of other characters who deserve more attention on the big screen. The initiative to focus on DC characters who have not had their own movie before gives the DCU a chance to chart a brand-new course.

It is not terribly surprising that DC Studios' new leadership has an interest in exploring more than the handful of comic characters general audiences have seen before. James Gunn helped transform the Guardians of the Galaxy team from a group of obscure comic characters to some of the most popular heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He took a similar approach when it came to choosing The Suicide Squad's characters. Meanwhile, Peter Safran's DC history included making Jason Momoa's Aquaman a huge star and introducing audiences to Zachary Levi's Shazam. They can now continue focusing on fresh heroes instead of rehashing the same ones audiences have seen before.

Many of the suggestions James Gunn has received to this point hold great potential for the big screen. It also potentially makes Gunn's DC Lobo tease even more intriguing, as it could be an even greater sign that he wants to bring the villain to the screen. The DCU's immediate future includes the big-screen debut of Blue Beetle, but the movies are otherwise focusing on known characters. As James Gunn continues planning DC Studios' future and teasing his love of Plastic Man and Bat-Mite, the DCU adding more lesser-known characters is welcomed.
