The writer/director behind many recent superhero projects such as The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, James Gunn, has revealed his top three video games of all time, including Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. The creator has long been associated with the video game industry, with a clear love of gaming.

Despite being most widely known for his work in the movie and TV space within the world of horror, superheroes, and Scooby Doo, Gunn has a history with video games, having co-written the 2012 game Lollipop Chainsaw with Masahiro Yuki. Lollipop Chainsaw featured a cheerleader zombie-hunter fighting the undead in a fictional California high school, and served as a throwback to pulpy horror classics such as Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Gunn revealed on his press tour for 2021's The Suicide Squad that this game even served as the inspiration for an ultra-stylized fight scene involving Harley Quinn in the film.

When asked by Middulman on Twitter what James Gunn's top three video games of all time were (via Game Rant), Gunn revealed that they were the much-loved Star Wars RPG Knights Of The Old Republic, Bioware's Mass Effect, and perhaps the most surprising pick for fans who expected a superhero title, 2008's tower defense game Defense GridKOTOR and Mass Effect are recognized as being unmissable games, as they are classic RPG-defining releases, and Defense Grid is a critically acclaimed game that, much like the other titles listed, pushed its genre to the next level with its gameplay and style. Expanding on his choices, Gunn stated that he was a huge fan of the tower defense genre, having "played every tower defense game there is."

With Gunn's love of video games clear, many have asked whether or not the director would tackle an on-screen version of one of his favorite titles. This conversation was first sparked last year when players called for the creator to direct a Star Wars movie adaption after Gunn announced KOTOR as a favorite game. Unfortunately for hopeful fans, Gunn stated at the time that not everything needs a film version.

Although Gunn didn't make it clear in his list whether he was talking about the first titles in each of the games' respective series, or is he was bending the rules slightly to incorporate their sequels, if there's one thing Gunn's selection has made clear it's that he appreciates games that are innovative. With the remake of Knights Of The Old Republic revealed to be in development exclusively for PS5 consoles, it'll be interesting to see if James Gunn will be picking it up upon release, or if he will be sticking to the classic.
