Oscar winner Taika Waititi is jokingly campaigning on social media to become the next James Bond following Daniel Craig's departure from the role. Craig began his tenure as Ian Fleming's iconic super spy in 2006's Casino Royale, which served as a reboot of Eon Productions' franchise surrounding the character. The star would carry the role through four sequels, including the soon-to-be-released No Time to Die.

The final film to star Craig as Bond will pick up five years after the events of Spectre, in which Ernst Stavro Blofeld was successfully captured and Bond elected to leave active service and enjoy a life with Dr. Madeleine Swann. He is later visited by CIA friend Felix Leiter who asks for Bond's assistance in the search for a missing scientist, putting him on the path to maniacal terrorist leader Lyutsifer Safin who seemingly has ties to both Bond and Swann's pasts. As the film gears up for its release, talks have begun amongst the general public of who will carry on the iconic namesake and one star is already humorously throwing their name in the ring.

Though Waititi has certainly made a name for himself as one of the funnier voices in Hollywood with projects such as What We Do in the Shadows and Thor: Ragnarok, he has also proven himself capable of pulling on some heartstrings with Jojo Rabbit and The Suicide Squad. It may not be enough to convince longtime fans of the franchise of his ability to take over the role of Bond moving forward, but his campaign will nonetheless spark a humorous discussion amongst audiences of his potential in the part. Especially coming on the heels of Craig's tenure in the lead, whom viewers are still debating his standing as the greatest Bond actor in comparison to Sean Connery to date.

Humorous or not, Waititi's campaign to become the next James Bond won't turn into anything for a long while given the producers have confirmed Craig will get to enjoy a year of celebrating his final outing before beginning to look at replacements. This downtime will certainly allow fans the opportunity to debate and discuss their choices to carry on the role, with everyone from Idris Elba to Regé-Jean Page and Tom Hardy on the top of many lists. In the meantime, the wait for Craig's finale is almost over as No Time to Die hits theaters on October 8.
