Matthew Vaughn Would Direct A James Bond Movie If Richard Madden Was Cast

Matthew Vaughn has revealed that he would direct a James Bond movie if Richard Madden was cast in the role of the titular spy. The actor made a name for himself playing Robb Stark in the early seasons of Game of Thrones, but his more recent turn as Police Sergeant David Budd in Bodyguard has garnered praise from viewers and critics alike. Madden can currently be seen in the Elton John biopic, Rocketman, but if Vaughn has anything to say about it, the actor should be adding “super spy” to his resume as well.

Vaughn has quite a bit of experience with the spy genre, having directed Kingsman: The Secret Service and its sequel, The Golden Circle. Based on The Secret Service comics by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons, the popular franchise also has a third installment on the way. However, that won’t begin shooting until after the upcoming prequel film, which Vaughn is also helming. The original movie followed the recruitment of Taron Egerton’s Gary "Eggsy" Unwin into a secret organization of spies. Egerton is currently starring in Rocketman, whose subject, Elton John, also appeared in Kingsman: The Golden Circle.

Speaking exclusively to Screen Rant during an interview for Rocketman’s release, Vaughn expressed an interest in directing a James Bond film if Madden landed the starring role. He stated, "If Madden plays Bond, I'm maybe even interested in directing it.” This is likely in reference to the rumors that Madden is being considered for the part of 007, after Daniel Craig’s tenure comes to a close with the release of James Bond 25.

There has been quite a bit of turmoil behind-the-scenes of the latest James Bond installment, with director Danny Boyle leaving the project over creative differences. He was replaced with True Detective helmer Cary Fukunaga. The future of the franchise seems uncertain at the moment, with no new 007 cast as of yet. Idris Elba is the current favorite to take up the mantle among many fans, though former Superman Henry Cavill’s name has been mentioned as well. It’s also worth noting that producers are reportedly looking to cast a Scottish actor as the next James Bond and Madden fits that bill.

The James Bond movies have been going strong since 1962 and while certain entries - and certain Bonds - have been more well-received than others, the franchise is seemingly unstoppable. Regardless of who winds up taking on the role following Craig’s fifth and final turn as 007 in Bond 25, it’s likely that these films will continue successfully for years to come. That being said, with Kingsman, Vaughn did inject some exciting new energy into a genre that can sometimes feel a bit too well worn. It’s also easy to see Madden as the titular spy, particularly following his impressive work in Bodyguard. Whatever happens, fans of James Bond will be eagerly awaiting an update.
