Jake Paul’s wife Tana Mongeau says her wedding night was hell. The two internet stars were married in August 2019. However, their nuptials proved to be much heavier on sensationalism than traditional romance. In a heartfelt video posted by Mongeau in December 29, 2019, the 21-year-old YouTube star details her unhappiness, as well as the road to her current sadness.

Mongeau blames the awful wedding night on a number of factors, including her father suffering a stroke, which led to her skipping her honeymoon. She also stated in the now-famous video clip that from the moment she and Paul said "I do," he seemed to lose interest. To keep him happy, Mongeau confessed that she consented to an open relationship. She feels this has been detrimental to her self-esteem. The pair's ceremony was broadcast live on YouTube and was criticized by some fans and viewers who felt that they married for attention and money, as opposed to being in love.

According to People, the outcry was compounded by the fact that Paul and Mongeau had only been dating for two months prior to the Las Vegas ceremony. The bride addressed those very concerns in the now-viral end-of-year clip.

"I’m so unhappy with the way my relationship with Jake looks in the public eye and I’ve done so much pretending that I don’t care what I do. So it’s my fault," she said. "I loved Jake so much, I still do. But I did so much of being the cool girl and not caring because I wanted to do life with this person and I wanted to see them happy and thrive and I wanted to show them that there are people that will accept you for who you are." Mongeau added, "I think I just put so much of myself into Jake that I lost myself, and that’s not his fault, and I’m not blaming him for that at all. It’s just the reality. I don’t regret it."

Jake Paul rose to fame as Dirk Mann on the Disney series Bizaardvark. From there, he channeled his success on Vine before the social media platform went under in early 2017. Since then, Paul has made a permanent home (and a fortune) on YouTube. As for Mongeau, her success stems from posting videos recounting comedic and ribald stories about her life and career for her YouTube channel. She also shared the beginnings of her love affair with Paul on the MTV series, Tana Turns 21.

Mongeau's admission about her marriage is actually heartbreaking. Sure, her relationship is sensational and provocative, but one has to still root for two people who feel they love each other enough to walk down the aisle. Mongeau has learned a lesson that a lot of people spend years in therapy to understand: "You can't love somebody else if you don't love yourself." With each confession made in her recent video, Mongeau speaks of subverting her own needs and dimming her own shine to make the man in her life happy. That's a recipe for disaster. Since she and Paul have admitted that they're taking things day-by-day, hopefully they'll be able to work through their relationship like adults. Even if they don't end up staying together, this marriage could be just the thing they both need to discover what works for them in life and what doesn't.
