Suicide Squad actor Jai Courtney has confirmed that his character, Captain Boomerang, will indeed be returning for James Gunn's upcoming sequel, The Suicide Squad. As the movie's title suggests, this will be as much a soft reboot as a sequel, focusing largely on a new group of villains as they're rounded up to reluctantly form a crime-fighting team.

Other returning characters include Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, and the sharpshooter assassin Deadshot - though the latter won't be played by Will Smith this time around. Due to scheduling conflicts preventing Smith from taking part in the sequel, Idris Elba is in talks to replace him as the character. Other DC villains that are expected to feature in The Suicide Squad's team include King Shark, Peacemaker, Polka Dot Man, and Ratcatcher, and Gunn reportedly wants Guardians of the Galaxy actor Dave Bautista to play Peacemaker.

While it definitely looks like the team is getting a shake-up, one character who will be returning is Courtney's Captain Boomerang, a wily Australian thief with a talent for throwing sharpened boomerangs with deadly precision. Speaking o Business Insider, Courtney confirmed, "We're getting ready to shoot in a few months' time. There's not much else I can reveal about it but, yeah, you'll be seeing Boomerang back for sure."

Of course, we don't know in what capacity Captain Boomerang will be returning, and some fans have theorized that Gunn's movie will kill off members of the previous Suicide Squad en masse at the start of the movie, resulting in a need for new recruits. The team is so-called because the Suicide Squad are sent on extremely dangerous black ops missions, and since they're criminals they're considered expendable. In David Ayer's Suicide Squad, poor Slipknot had barely started the mission before he tried to pull off an escape attempt and ended up getting his head blown off by the bomb implanted in his neck. Incidentally, it was Captain Boomerang who convinced Slipknot to try and escape, as a test to see if the bombs were real.

Though he doesn't exactly have the most useful of skill sets, Captain Boomerang was a generally well-liked character in the first movie, owing to the fact that he mainly served as comic relief. He's definitely the kind of lovable misfit character that Gunn could have a lot of fun with. As the actor mentioned, The Suicide Squad is expected to begin filming later this year, in September, so we can probably expect more casting news and character details to emerge soon.
