Fans of myths and fairytales will probably want to mark their movie going calendars for Jack the Giant Killer, director Bryan Singer's forthcoming new take on the Jack and the Beanstalk tale.
After being given the official green light by the studio, the search was on to find a suitable actor play the titular Jack. Names such as Aaron Johnson (Kick-Ass) and Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: First Class) were mentioned as strong contenders. And while Jack has yet to be cast (Johnson still appears to be the frontrunner) we now know of two veteran actors who have joined the cast as a couple of very intriguing characters.
Nighy will play Fallon, the leader of the giants. The interesting thing is this particular giant is two-headed and Nighy will play one of said heads, with the other head being played by John Kassir (Race to Witch Mountain). I would have thought the heads of a two-headed giant would be identical...
Tucci will play a character called Roderick who is the villain of the story and an advisor to the King. The character supposedly has plans to take over things (of course he does).
In case you're wondering how Giant Killer differs from the "Jack and the Beanstalk" source material, check out The Wrap's plot description of the film:
"In the movie, a long-standing peace between humans and giants is threatened when a young farmer tries to rescue a princess who has been kidnapped and taken to the giants' kingdom."
No mention of those famous magic beans or the beanstalk for that matter (although that's not to say those things won't ultimately be in the film) - rather it looks like Singer - along with screenwriters Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects), Mark Bomback (Die Hard 4.0) and Darren Lemke (Shrek Forever After) - have taken the giant angle of the story and turned it up to 11!
While this casting means that two of the key villainous roles have been taken care of, we still need not only a leading man but an actress to fill the role of the princess in need of Jack's rescue. When we last reported on the film, three actresses were being tested for the princess role: Adelaide Kane, Lily Collins and Juno Temple. There's still no word on whether any of those actresses have landed the role or not (stay tuned).
I'm always up for a new film directed by the great Bryan Singer and one about a hero killing giants with Stanley Tucci and Bill Nighy as part of the cast is more than enough to have me there on opening day. I'll certainly be curious to see who Singer ends up casting as the eponymous Jack - Kick Ass' Aaron Johnson is a great choice, in my opinion.
Jack the Giant Killer is scheduled to begin shooting this March in London with a release date TBA.
