The announcement that a Jack Ryan spinoff is currently in the works could mean an adaptation of the iconic Rainbow Six could be on its way. After it was revealed (via Deadline) that the Amazon series would end after season 4, it was also confirmed that Michael Peña would lead a spinoff as Domingo ‘Ding’ Chavez. The character has played a major role in dozens of Tom Clancy novels and has partnered with both Ryan and John Clark several times. Peña is set to appear as Chavez in the third season, alongside John Krasinski as Ryan, and his inclusion hints at the potential future of this iteration of the Ryanverse.

Domingo ‘Ding’ Chavez has been affiliated with several military and governmental groups throughout Clancy’s book series and has already appeared in a rebooted live action Jack Ryan movie. Originally a soldier in the United States Army, he excelled in stealth operations and was recruited into the CIA. He eventually found himself working for The Campus, a secret organization launched by President Jack Ryan Sr. Utilizing Chavez as the jumping off point for the expansion of the universe could hint towards several adaptations of Clancy’s books, including the option of bringing a Rainbow Six TV show into existence.

What Michael Peña's Jack Ryan Spinoff Can Be About

If the future of the Amazon TV show is going to focus on Chavez, there are several Tom Clancy books that could be adapted. Chavez has appeared in 22 novels from the Ryanverse and the character has a rich history to explore. The obvious choice would be to adapt Clear and Present Danger, which sees Chavez plucked from the army to join the CIA. Alternatively, Chavez plays a central role in The Sum of All Fears, which would make for a thrilling addition to the current canon. Peña’s version is set to appear for the first time in Jack Ryan season 3.

Despite there being plenty of original source material for the TV show to adapt, when Krasinski discussed the current Amazon run (via EW), he said Tom Clancy’s characters are being dropped into new storylines and that it’s not a given that any book will be adapted. Keeping this in mind, it’s likely Michael Peña’s spinoff will still need to stay true to the character of Chavez. His character arc would most likely include his rise from the 7th Infantry Division up to his time in the CIA and perhaps incorporating his role in leading a particularly notable counterterrorist organization: Rainbow.

How The Jack Ryan Spinoff Can Lead To Rainbow Six

The secretive international group, Rainbow, was central to Clancy’s book Rainbow Six and the book has since been adapted into an iconic and super successful series of video games. What is notable about Rainbow Six, and why it could be a perfect jumping off point for the Jack Ryan shared universe spinoff, is that it doesn’t involve Ryan while Chavez is integral to the plot. Rainbow is comprised of two teams of international agents and Chavez commands one of them, Team 2. With Krasinski signed up to only four seasons of Jack Ryan and Peña leading the charge for the future of the Amazon Ryanverse, an adaptation of Rainbow Six not only seems likely but inevitable.
