So far, most Jack Reacher fans have been impressed by Amazon Prime's 8-episode crime thriller, Reacher, because it mostly remains faithful to the events and themes that play out in the books. The series also gets the casting right, something the Tom Cruise movies were heavily criticized for.

Yet as book-accurate as the series is, there are still some details about the protagonist that it leaves out. Since there are 26 Reacher novels worth of material to deal with, it's understandable for some information to be left out. Hopefully, such details will appear in the seasons to come, if the show's popularity continues.

Jack Reacher's Date Of Birth

Jack Reacher was born in Berlin, on Oct. 29, 1960. His mother gave bother inside a military base and simply gave him the name Jack Reacher. According to Never Go Back, he is referred to in his military record as "Jack (None) Reacher" since he has no middle name.

Fans hoping to see the adventures of an older Jack Reacher can bury themselves in the latest Lee Child books, though the author is notorious for jumping back to earlier timelines. An important detail worth noting is that Reacher was 37 when the first novel was published back in 1997. Reacher is 37 in the series too, which also happens to be actor Alan Ritchson's real age.

Jack Reacher Settled Down Briefly

Jack Reacher flirts with Officer Roscoe in Reacher

Jack Reacher isn't the commitment type but he briefly settles down with Jodie Garber, the daughter of one of his commanding officers, in Tripwire. But by, Echo Burning, the two have broken up. He also sleeps with Detective Theresa Lee in Gone Tomorrow.

Reacher's lack of interest in romantic pairings is witnessed in the series too. The furthest he goes is to sleep with one of the most intelligent Reacher characters, Officer Roscoe. And even during the hotel room tryst, it's her that initiates it. He doesn't even kiss her goodbye when he leaves Margrave in the season finale. Whether or not there will be a Jodie Garber in future seasons is merely something to speculate on.

Jack Reacher's Inspiration For Drifting

Reacher Leaving Margrave

According to Never Go Back, Jack Reacher draws inspiration from the Vikings, the Romans, and the Polynesians since they embraced wanderlust too. He also believes he is genetically predisposed to be a nomad hence he cannot settle in one place.

Reacher's penchant for drifting is a good thing as it eliminates any form of monotony by spreading out his adventures to various locations across the United States. Occasionally, he gets to go out of the country too. At the end of Season 1, Reacher leaves Margrave too, hence fans can look forward to an adventure in a new town next time.

Jack Reacher's Possessions

Reacher argues with Finlay in Reacher

The fact that the ex-military policeman is a drifter is well known, but what exactly does he possess? Initially, he only carries a foldable toothbrush but according to The Affair, drifters were required to show some identification after 9/11 so he began carrying an ATM card and an ID.

Ordinarily, movie and TV drifters such as one of the best '80s action heroes, John Rambo, are shown to carry large bags. By walking around with nothing, Reacher paints himself as a very unique action hero. Doing so has its advantages as it prevents him from standing out too much and drawing attention. After all, his size is already a problem.

Jack Reacher Never Does Laundry

Reacher, Roscoe and Finlay analyze a case in Reacher

One of the details revealed in The Killing Floor is that Reacher never does laundry. Whenever his clothes get dirty, he simply stuffs them in the bin and gets new ones.

The exact reason for this practice is never explained. The lack of a place to take his laundry cannot be singled out as a legit reason since most of the towns he visits have motels that happily take care of their clients' attire.  A better reason would be that he never had time to do laundry while in the military hence he has maintained this practice.

Jack Reacher Is An Expert Marksman

Reacher and Roscoe try to avoid gunfire.

Jack Reacher is hardly seen firing from a distance in the series but he is quite the expert marksman. In One Shot, he is described as the only military policeman to win the US Marine Corps 1000 Yard Invitational rifle contest.

Since he isn't a sniper, Reacher doesn't necessarily need to know how to fire from a distance. He is often shown to be fond of close kills and fights too. The presumption would be that this little detail is revealed only to make him appear more badass. Overall, there is no combat-related thing the former U.S. Army Military Police Corps member can't do.

Jack Reacher Has A Photographic Memory

Reacher remembers just about everything but this ability is best seen through his love for music. According to Gone Tomorrow, he has memorized multiple Blues singles in their entirity and doesn't need any kind of device to play them.

It's one of the more unrealistic things about the character since there is hardly any person sharp enough to not need a device to listen to music. If Reacher indeed had that kind of memory, it could have been recognized early by his superiors. Consequently, he would probably have risen to the highest ranks of the military of the CIA.

Jack Reacher Isn't A Gym Buff

One of the reasons Reacher is one of the best book-to-TV adaptations is that the protagonist's massive physique is maintained. In the books, he is described as being 6'5 inches with a weight of around 210–250 pounds. Additionally, he has a 50-inch chest and a 6-pack like a cobbled city street, Interestingly, he doesn't work out, claiming his size is genetic.

Every member of Jack Reacher's family is described as large and well-built in the novels, therefore, his claim about genetics is entirely accurate. It's thanks to their size and strength that they all joined the military or special government agencies. Reacher's mother, Josephine Moutier-Reacher, is even reported to have killed a person as early as the age of 13.

Jack Reacher's Brother's Death

In the movie, Jack Reacher's brother is killed as part of the counterfeiting conspiracy. He is said to have been a Secret Service agent too. The story in the books is slightly different. Joe Reacher worked for the U.S. Treasury Department and was killed while meeting an investigation subject.

The protagonist's brother's death means more to him in the series since it's linked to the overall counterfeiting conspiracy. Reacher is shown to care more about avenging Joe's death than stopping crime. Thanks to Joe being made a greater part of the storyline, Reacher gets to have a human side instead of simply being a fighting machine.

Jack Reacher Speaks French

Jack Reacher breaks himself free of the zip-tie handcuffs.

In Die Trying, Reacher tricks the baddies into thinking he is a French mercenary. He does this by speaking French fluently. He is able to do so because his parents were both French.

Given how heavily Lee Child vouches for the protagonist's intelligence, his multilingual abilities don't come as a surprise. A person who has knowledge of just about everything is a person that can be easily fluent in multiple languages. And since he was stationed in different parts of the world during his military career, it's likely that he knows many other languages too.
