'Jack the Giant Killer' Trailer: Action-Packed Twist On an Old Fairy Tale

Three titles due out in 2012 offer big-budgeted, action-driven re-interpretations (or spin-offs) of classic fairy tales: Paramount Pictures' Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters, Universal's Snow White and the Huntsman, and Warner Bros.' Jack the Giant Killer - which reunites screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie and director Bryan Singer for a third time (following The Usual Suspects and Valkyrie).

An official teaser trailer has been released for Jack the Giant Killer; as is to be expected, the film looks to have re-imagined the relatively simple tale of a young farmer, some magic beans, and a dangerous giant, into a grand-scale, swords & steel fantasy epic.

Here is an official plot synopsis for the flick:

JACK THE GIANT KILLER tells the story of an ancient war that is reignited when a young farmhand unwittingly opens a gateway between our world and a fearsome race of giants. Unleashed on the Earth for the first time in centuries, the giants strive to reclaim the land they once lost, forcing the young man, Jack, into the battle of his life to stop them. Fighting for a kingdom, its people, and the love of a brave princess, he comes face to face with the unstoppable warriors he thought only existed in legend—and gets the chance to become a legend himself.

Overall, this Jack the Giant Killer promo is a pretty decent tease. It effectively alludes to the classic fairy tale while also clarifying how this new version will differ; offers a brief-but-sufficient look at the film's bright-eyed (and over his head) hero (as played by X-Men: First Class' Nicholas Hoult); and wisely holds off on revealing the CGI giants in full just yet... though, that might partially be because the effects shots simply have yet to be completed.

This trailer also only offers a very brief glance at some of the film's noteworthy supporting cast, which includes people like Ian McShane (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides), Stanley Tucci (Captain America), Ewan McGregor (the Star Wars prequel trilogy), Eddie Marsan (Sherlock Holmes), and Bill Nighy (Underworld) - in fact, a couple of those actors don't even show up at all in this early Jack the Giant Killer footage.

On that note - have a look at the film's official poster below:

Singer is a solid filmmaker who looks to have fashioned Jack the Giant Killer as a swashbuckling adventure romp that's more action-packed and set piece-heavy than his previous blockbuster productions (see: the first two X-Men movies and Superman Returns). Expect Singer's fairy tale flick to be both less cerebral and atmospheric than his previous comic book projects.

There's (arguably) some reason to be concerned about the quality of the Jack the Giant Killer screenplay, which features contributions from McQuarrie, Mark Bomback (Live Free or Die Hard), David Dobkin (Arthur & Lancelot), Darren Lemke (Shrek Forever After), and Dan Studney (Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical). However, most of these writers read as being decent fits for the film, so hopefully this won't prove to be an example of creative input overload.

Jack the Giant Killer hits 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D theaters around the U.S. on June 15th, 2012.
