Warning! Spoilers for Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters: Jabba the Hutt #1

Jabba the Hutt is replacing Boba Fett with a newly introduced bounty hunter named Deva Lompop. Although Fett was at Jabba’s side throughout the Original Trilogy, there was a time when their business relationship got rocky. Now, Lompop is proving herself to be a worthy candidate to fill the void that Fett left.

As the Star Wars comics crossover event War of the Bounty Hunters continues, Jabba the Hutt is getting his own self-titled special one-shot issue. If someone has the right to be upset in midst of the current conflict, it’s the galaxy's biggest slug gangster. After losing the carbonite encased smuggler Han Solo, he’s furious with his hired hand Boba Fett. Their feud continues in War of the Bounty Hunters: Jabba the Hutt #1, written by Justina Ireland with art by Ibraim Roberson and Luca Pzizari. The one-shot also features a cover illustrated by Mahmud Asar and Matthew Wilson.

Much like the Empire, Jabba the Hutt has many bounty hunters at his disposal, as he hires Deva Lompop to finish the job that Boba Fett failed to do. In a preview revealed by StarWars.com, Jabba is done waiting for the frozen Han Solo to arrive at his palace and employs Lompop to recover his prize. As Bib Fortuna reaches out to her, she asks if this is the job that she’ll finally receive her full payment on, as Jabba owed her a debt. Traveling to Nar Shadda where Boba Fett had most recently been tracked by Jabba, Deva Lompop asks around for information, questioning a Bothan and a Gran. Although she doesn’t find out much, the story teases what she’s capable of, since Jabba only hires the best.

In a flashback to an earlier meeting between Jaba and Lompop, it’s revealed she became an information broker, seemingly after a long life in the underworld. At some point, she had given up a life of assassin work, but Jabba got her back in the game. Back then, she happened to cross paths with Boba Fett who had accompanied Jabba on the visit. As a Shani, her life span can go on for centuries, and apparently, she was even around during the High Republic era. Her advanced age feels ironic considering her youthful and energetic design, from her green skin to her colorful mohawk.

By the time of Return of the Jedi, Jabba acquires the carbonite frozen Captain Solo, meaning that he’ll get what he wants soon. However, it’s doubtful that Deva Lompop will stick around for long, as Boba Fett eventually gets back in Jabba’s good graces. The two bounty hunters will likely be pitted against each other with no other option than war, as the titular event hints. This time, Jabba the Hutt is setting himself up for victory, potentially at the cost of the Shani bounty hunter’s life.
