iZombie returns to TV screens next month after a hiatus of nearly a year. It looks like this third season is going to strike a different kind of balance between episodic comedy and a big background story arc, as the zombie population continues to grow, and with just over a week to go to the premiere, the network is putting more of its cards on the table.

As it does with its DC TV shows, The CW has released a synopsis for the season 3 premiere ahead of when the episode airs. The official synopsis for the first episode reveals that fans will be treated to some backstory on Detective Clive Babineaux this season.

The synopsis promises the first crime-solving team-up between Liv (Rose McIver) and Major (Robert Buckley), now that Major is a part of Team Z. It also promises a development on Babineaux's (Malcolm Goodwin) backstory and Peyton (Aly Michalka) and Ravi's (Rahul Kohli) relationship.

"When Liv (Rose McIver), Clive (Malcolm Goodwin) and Ravi (Rahul Kohli) arrive at the scene to investigate a fatal car accident, they begin to suspect foul play was involved. Both starving, Liv and Major (Robert Buckley) consume the brains of the accident victims, a well-meaning father and his angsty teenage daughter. Meanwhile, when Clive is brought in for questioning about a family that was murdered, he’s forced to reveal his past history with them. Lastly, Peyton (Aly Michalka) extends an olive branch to Ravi (Rahul Kohli), and Major hits a road block in his search for Natalie (guest star Brooke Lyons “The Affair”). David Anders also stars. Jason Bloom directed the episode written by Diane Ruggiero-Wright."

iZombie - Major and Liv in Method Head

This synopsis sounds like the first episode of the season will follow the usual format, with a murder to solve at the core of the story, and some relationship development happening at the same time. In season 2, the show revealed more about Babineaux and his move to the homicide department, so it looks like this will start to develop that backstory even further -- or perhaps a look at some of his more personal history, which he has kept under wraps for much of the show so far. Peyton and Ravi were struggling in season 2, after Peyton ran out on both Ravi and Liv when she discovered Liv's undead secret, so this may mean a move toward the two rekindling their relationship this season -- although Peyton has been spending time with Blaine (David Anders) in the trailers, so only time will tell what happens there.

It's great to see Major getting on board with Liv's crime-solving antics, and it may help him become more comfortable with being a zombie again, just as it did her. It'll be interesting to see what the brains of a teenage girl do to Major this episode, and how this team-up challenges his relationship with Liv. Learning more about Babineaux should also be a draw for the premiere, especially now that he also knows Liv's secret, and can become a more integrated part of the team. It does sound like fan-favorite Blaine won't be playing too big a part in this episode, but that doesn't mean he won't have a lot to do in season 3.
