It Takes Two is the latest video game to receive TV and movie adaptations, with the company behind the Sonic the Hedgehog movie helping to make the project a success. The action-adventure game is renowned for its expansive gameplay mechanics and strong, co-op foundations. It Takes Two's popularity was solidified after winning the prestigious Game of the Year award at 2021's The Game Awards.

Despite finding fame with its unique co-op gameplay, It Takes Two also packs an incredibly wholesome storyline. The game follows May and Cody, voiced by Annabelle Dowler and The Batman's Joseph Balderrama, as two soon-to-be-divorced parents who are transformed into dolls and forced to face their relationship woes. Sent on a hilarious adventure by an anthropomorphic therapy book, the pair faces challenges along their journey back to full-size that require both of their commitment to complete. With an impressive method of taking a serious and often difficult theme and making it palatable, It Takes Two makes for the ideal source material to adapt into further work.

Revealed by Variety, multiple projects based on It Takes Two are in development. Hazelight Studios founder and director of It Takes Two Josef Fares stated that, since the game "has a strong narrative with many crazy characters and just as crazy co-op action moments, the potential is huge for a great adaption to film or television." Adding to the excitement, fellow Hazelight Studios manager Oskar Wolontis said the team was "very excited for the opportunity to expand this beloved IP beyond gaming, for both new and returning fans to appreciate." dj2 Entertainment, whose recent success included the Sonic the Hedgehog adaptation, stated they "can’t wait to bring these characters -and this world- to life on the big and small screen." While it's still very early days for the project, Sonic writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller are thought to be behind the It Takes Two adaptation.

Just how a multi-platform approach to the project could work remains to be seen, but the quirky world of It Takes Two certainly has enough weight behind it to create compelling content. Having Casey and Miller onboard can also only be a good thing for the future of It Takes TwoSonic the Hedgehog hit all the beats that could make dj2 Entertainment's latest project a success, boasting a fun adventure that ultimately had family at its heart, something very much the focus of It Takes Two's storyline.

It Takes Two isn't the only video game adaptation in the works, as interest in the genre grows. dj2 Entertainment alone is responsible for Netflix's Tomb Raider anime, the Sleeping Dogs movie, and the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog sequel, while just this week the trailer reveal for Peacock's Halo shows off a gritty adaptation of the popular franchise. Adapting It Takes Two may come as a surprise to some, but with a strong pedigree behind it and incredible source material, the franchise will soon look to win hearts with a much wider audience.
