Hazelight's co-op only action-puzzler for PC, Xbox, and PlayStation, It Takes Two, has already topped 1 million in sales, according to the developer. The game was only released on March 25, and though it was promoted by EA and anticipated by gamers, it was predicted to be one of the smaller triple-A titles of 2021 compared with rivals like Outriders. These high sales numbers clearly show it outperformed those expectations.

The unusual premise of It Takes Two finds Cody and May, a couple on the brink of divorce, suddenly trapped in the form of dolls due to magic triggered by their daughter Rose's tear. A humanoid self-help book tries to heal the couple's marriage as they race to reach Rose, but this involves the book deliberately putting up obstacles that force Cody and May to work together. The game's look and tone is similar to some Pixar films or the Henry Selick stop-motion movie Coraline, and it has been fairly well-received by players and reviewers. As of this writing, It Takes Two has an 89 Metacritic score. Both online and offline play are supported.

Hazelight revealed the sales figure via Twitter on April 23, boasting that the game has sold over 1 million copies. It didn't provide exact units or say whether this figure includes It Takes Two's Friend Pass, which allows a second person to play for free. In theory, as many as 2 million people may have had a chance to play, though in truth many or most buyers are likely playing in front of the same screen. Hazelight says that sales are "still going strong."

It Takes Two is the developer's sophomore effort. Its first game, the prison break caper A Way Out, was highlighted at E3 2017 despite the idea of mandatory co-op being considered a difficult sell in some quarters. Both projects were directed by Josef Fares, who was also responsible for Starbreeze Studios's Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, an award-winning single-player game from 2013 in which two characters are handled with one controller. That one, however, had only sold north of 800,000 copies by January 2015.

Hitting 1 million units could potentially pave the way for It Takes Two to get a sequel. Without mentioning spoilers, the game's ending does allow for this possibility. There haven't been any rumors along these lines, though, and Fares has so far shown little interest in repeating ideas outside of refining dual-character action. Any follow-up would be in the earliest production stages regardless.
