Tim Curry's Pennywise makes a special appearance in the horrifying second IT trailer that has been released for director Andy Muschetti's R-rated theatrical re-adaptation of Stephen King's classic novel. The new IT trailer seems to have been received quite well overall, and contains multiple images likely to cause nightmares for those with a severe fear of clowns. In a quick moment though, the trailer also delivered a Curry-related easter egg sure to delight anyone with affection for the 1990 IT TV miniseries.
Going into this new IT film, one of the biggest questions fans asked has been whether young actor Bill Skarsgard can possibly manage to live up to genre legend Tim Curry's chilling - and yet also often hilarious - portrayal of Pennywise the Clown, the titular shape-shifting monster's preferred guise. While it won't be possible to make that determination until after the film is released to theaters, no matter how good Skarsgard ends up being, it's likely that Curry's take on Pennywise will continue to be preferred by many.
Thankfully, at least in a small way, Tim Curry's version of Pennywise actually made it into the new IT, as visible during the aforementioned easter egg in the new trailer. As pointed out by Bloody Disgusting, during the scene near the end of the trailer in which Richie (Stranger Things' Finn Wolfhard) enters a room full of clown dolls, a small replica of Curry's Pennywise can be seen right next to where Skarsgard's Pennywise emerges from to attack. Pictures of the moment are included below:
As seen above, through this cameo, it's almost like Curry's old take on Pennywise is watching over Skarsgard's iteration, and one assumes possibly whispering techniques for proper victim storage in his ear. While little nods to the original are nothing new for these types of remakes or reboots, putting Curry-wise in there illustrates the respect Muschetti and company clearly have for the IT TV miniseries that succeeded in frightening so many viewers back in the '90s.
With IT's second trailer now out, the anticipation for the film's September release date only continues to build. Will Skarsgard measure up to Curry? That remains to be seen, but at least the hearts of the re-adaptation's creative team appear to be in the right place. For their tribute, Tim Curry's Pennywise would surely offer them a balloon.
