In news that will make fans of IT very happy, Jessica Chastain has confirmed talks are happening in regards to her playing grown-up Beverly in the sequel. 2017 has been an impressive year for horror movies, with IT being a watershed success for the genre. The Stephen King adaptation is already one of the most successful horror movies of all time, in addition to being the first R-rated horror movie to pass $300 million in the U.S.
Horror specialists Blumhouse also had a great year, with films like Annabelle: Creation, Happy Death Day, and Get Out all receiving great reviews and healthy box-office. Warner Bros are so proud of IT’s unprecedented success that the studio is even making an awards season much for the film, hoping to secure nominations for Best Picture and Best Director for Andy Muschetti.
When Screen Rant interviewed Jessica Chastain and Idris Elba for their upcoming movie Molly’s Game, Chastain spoke of her interest in taking on the role of Bev Marsh in the IT movie sequel. Chastain's name has been thrown around in relation to the role ever since the first IT came out, and it’s hard to imagine a better fit for adult Beverly. Here is how the conversation went with Chastain and Elba:
SR: You two had amazing chemistry in the film, so I would like you two to be in the IT sequel as Mike and Bev.
Jessica Chastain: Alright.
Idris Elba: Is that right?
SR: What are your thoughts on that?
Idris Elba: I haven’t seen It. Is that bad?
Jessica Chastain: What?
Idris Elba: I haven’t seen it! I’ve been working! I’ve been directing.
Jessica Chastain: No, let’s be honest. He’s afraid of scary movies, I think.
Idris Elba: A little bit. No. Yes. A little bit. Was it a good film?
SR: It’s amazing!
Idris Elba: Fantastic.
SR: Jessica’s name has been thrown out there to be the adult Bev. How serious are those talks getting?
Jessica Chastain: Well, I love Andy and Barbara. I worked with them on Andy’s directorial debut, you know, his film, Mama. His first film. And you know, Barbara is one of my best friends so…
Idris Elba: Okay!
Jessica Chastain: We’ll see.
Idris Elba: Get me in! I LOVE THAT MOVIE!
Jessica Chastain: Listen, of course, I want to work… they’re my friends. They’re like my family. Anything that they’re doing I want to be a part of, so I hope we can make it happen.
IT made the wise decision to split King’s mammoth source material in half, and deal with the childhood sections first. A big part of why the movie worked was down to the excellent casting of the child actors, who all did great work. Sophie Lillis made a big impression with her performance as Bev, who emerged as the unofficial lead character. While actors have yet to be cast as the grown-up Losers Club for IT: Chapter 2, Chastain has definitely emerged as a fan favorite and its encouraging to hear that she's interested in the possibility.
Elba would also be a strong choice for Mike, and it would help the actor recover from his other Stephen King adaptation - The Dark Tower. While the actor did great work in the lead role, the movie around him was a major disappointment for fans of the books, and while Elba is still keen on a sequel, it looks very unlikely; a role in IT: Chapter 2 would certainly be a happy outcome for all.
