IT Chapter Two’s ending saw the Losers going back to their normal lives, but not without revealing one final secret in the shape of two carved letters: R+E. Stephen King’s novel IT was famously adapted into a miniseries back in 1990 with Tim Curry as the unforgettable Pennywise, and the story finally made its way to the big screen in 2017 thanks to director Andrés Muschietti.

IT Chapter One covered the first half of the novel, which follows the Losers Club as kids and their first encounter with the evil, shapeshifting entity they call “IT”. IT Chapter Two catches up with the group 27 years later, and marks the end of the Losers’ journey and battle against Pennywise and all the shapes IT can take. But it also expanded a bit on these characters, especially Richie Tozier (Bill Hader/Finn Wolfhard), who had a “big secret” that Pennywise threatened to reveal, and it was ultimately revealed by himself, though only to viewers.

At the end of IT Chapter Two, with Stan Uris reading his letter in a voiceover, Richie is shown arriving to the bridge where he carved “R+” when he was a kid, as shown in a flashback. It’s then revealed that the other letter was “E”, and after everything that had already happened in the film, viewers learned that “R+E” stood for “Richie+Eddie”. Richie’s “big secret” was that he’s gay, but more than that, he was in love with Eddie Kaspbrak (James Ransone/Jack Dylan Grazer), who was a constant target of his jokes but also his best friend.

It Chapter 2 Richie Eddie

Richie wasn’t shown to come out to the rest of the Losers, nor did he explicitly revealed his secret (a flashback with Henry Bowers’ cousin was what made it clear to viewers), but it’s quite possible that the rest of the Losers found out after Eddie was killed by Pennywise, and when they all consoled Richie in the quarry. It’s also unknown if Eddie was aware or if he secretly felt the same way towards Richie, though many readers have speculated he might be gay, with some viewers feeling IT Chapter One hinted at a deeper relationship between Richie and Eddie.

Eddie’s death in the novel was heartbreaking, but IT Chapter Two made it even more emotional with the reveal of Richie’s feelings for him. If it was mutual or not is something that only the writers know for now, but the “R+E” scene has already made some viewers think that Eddie was aware of Richie’s “secret” and quite possibly felt the same way.
