Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will introduce a new character named Helena, who might still be related to an old Indiana Jones character. Helena is played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge and will act as Indy's new sidekick and the catalyst for the movie's plot. She is also Indiana's goddaughter and the daughter of an old friend of Indy's. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny director James Mangold has confirmed that Helena is the daughter of a character that hasn't been seen before. However, that doesn't necessarily mean she can't be related to an old Indiana Jones figure.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny sees the return of Harrison Ford's beloved treasure hunter Indiana Jones. The film will take place in 1969, 12 years after the previous entry, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Many questions and details about Indiana Jones 5 are still uncertain. However, it's already known that some legacy characters will be returning in the film, and Helena could be related to one of them.

Phoebe Waller Bridge Helena Indiana Jones 5 Character

The Indiana Jones timeline has spanned several decades, with a teenage Indy being seen as far back as 1912 in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. With Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny taking place in 1969, there are well over five decades worth of characters that Indy has met. Because of the sprawling timeline and the sheer number of characters, Helena could be related to one of Indiana Jones' assortment of previous characters. Even though Helena may not be the daughter of an old character, she could easily be the granddaughter, cousin, or niece of an old character in Indiana Jones 5.

Furthermore, the film would benefit from Helena being related to a key character. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny seems to be a love letter to the franchise, featuring several returning characters and storylines. Because of this, it would be strange not to have Helena tied into the franchise's past. Indiana Jones' final adventure once again features Nazis as well as Indy reuniting with Sallah. The film will be full of Indy reminiscing about his past, so it would feel wrong to have such a nostalgic and conclusive story prominently feature a character with no connection to the older movies.

Several characters from past Indiana Jones movies could be related to Helena. Sallah's actor John Rhys-Davies returns for Indiana Jones 5, and he's old enough to have a grandchild Helena's age. He's been a trusted friend of Indy for decades, so it would make sense for Indy to take Helena as his goddaughter. She could also be related to his longest-term romantic interest, Marion Ravenwood, with Indy having ties to the Ravenwoods since before Marion. Another stranger possibility could be that she is the cousin of Mutt Williams. The franchise has many characters that could be related to Helena in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny without it feeling like a jarring storytelling choice.
