Iron Man's BARF technology from Captain America: Civil War returns in set photos from a new mystery Marvel Cinematic Universe project. Officially named Binarily Augmented Retro-Framing, the holographic illusion technology was first introduced in the 2016 Joe and Anthony Russo-directed film. Aside from the revelation that it was created by Quentin Beck for Stark Industries in Spider-Man: Far From Home, BARF technology has yet to factor into the MCU again.

When Tony Stark debuted BARF in Captain America: Civil War, he presented it primarily as a therapeutical technology. It allowed him to relive his last day with his parents before they were killed by Bucky Barnes while still under the influence of HYDRA as the Winter Soldier. Beyond that, however, it's uncertain if BARF has other functions. Marvel Studios didn't bring the tech back again much in the latter part of the Infinity Saga, aside from a flashback scene in Spider-Man: Far From Home. As far as seeing Iron Man use his invention more often, the genius/billionaire playboy simply didn't have time for BARF as he became preoccupied with the arrival of Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

Now that the Infinity Saga is done, it seems like Marvel Studios is bringing BARF back into the MCU. A prop labeled as the Iron Man technology was recently spotted on the set of an upcoming Multiverse Saga project that is currently filming in Atlanta. The photos are courtesy of the Atlanta Filming account on Instagram, and include a shot of Vincent D'Onofrio's Kingpin on set. Check it out below:

Despite the MCU moving forward into the Multiverse Saga, viewers have recently begun to revisit Captain America: Civil War. The film was one of the key pillars of the Infinity Saga as it ended with the break-up of the Avengers, giving Thanos the perfect opportunity to attack Earth. While the return of BARF in an unknown MCU project may not be a straightforward revival of Captain America: Civil War's narrative, elements of the movie are still present in the continuing MCU. Between this new image of BARF tech and the Sokovia Accords factoring in the new Disney+ series, She-Hulk, it seems like Marvel Studios is wrapping up some loose ends left by the 2016 blockbuster, despite both Iron Man and Captain America no longer being in the franchise.

The question now is which Multiverse Saga project BARF could factor into. Considering that these images feature D'Onofrio's Kingpin, the obvious choice is Echo. After all, Stark Tech was also in Hawkeye (which marked Kingpin's MCU return) when Clint Barton used mini-missiles created by Tony Stark's company. That being said, it's also possible that the images are from the Ironheart set, which is also filming in Atlanta. Since the Disney+ show directly tackles Iron Man's legacy and Tony presented BARF in MIT in Captain America: Civil War (the same school Riri Williams, Iron Man's MCU replacement) is attending, it makes more sense for Marvel Studios to bring it back in this show. Of course, the image could just be a decoy, since a similarly-labeled briefcase was spotted on the set of Avengers: Endgame, but never made it into the MCU film.
