Iron Man is one of Marvel’s most iconic characters, with the recent success of the MCU furthering the hero even more into mainstream audiences. However, as is typical with comics, the person beneath the mask may change over the years. For instance, In addition to Bruce Wayne, Batman has also been Dick Grayson, Damian Wayne, and Terry McGinnis. Iron Man has also been subject to this, with Eddie March and James Rhodes both being designated Iron Man in addition to Tony Stark. That being said, while some may struggle to even comprehend someone other than Tony in the Iron Man armor, they would certainly struggle to accept that a squirrel once wielded the iconic Iron Man suit.

In issue 2 of The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl by Ryan North, Erica Henderson, and Rico Renzi, Squirrel Girl receives her own Iron Man armor. This armor is designed with Squirrel Girl in mind, complete with an iron squirrel tail (even though this tail looks far more insect-like than squirrel-like). However, the rodent themed superhero also finds that the suit is also capable of creating other suits with different shapes. After she is told this, Squirrel Girls gets very excited and it becomes easy to guess what Doreen Green is planning to do with this incredibly high-tech piece of technology.

The following panel shows that Tippy Toe, Squirrel Girl’s friend and companion, was given her own Iron Man costume.

The costume itself is crafted from the glove of an Iron Man suit, complete with a helmet that appears to draw more similarities with the classic Iron Man costume than with the version that Squirrel Girl is wearing in this issue. The page then ends with Squirrel and Squirrel Girl flying off to the moon in their brand new, high tech Iron Man armor.

On the face of it, this may be incredibly strange. However, for Marvel, it isn’t even too weird. For instance, Marvel has the character of Rocket Racoon, a hero who is an expert in weapons and master tactician regularly appearing on the pages of their comics. In addition to Marvel, DC Comics also has its own strange, animal heroes. For DC, the most prominent example of this would be Dex-Starr, the domestic house cat who became a member of the Red Lantern Corps after almost being drowned in a bag. Animals can be heroes too, like this unique version of Iron Man.
