Warning: spoilers ahead for Iron Man #11!

Tony Stark is one of the most brilliant minds in the Marvel Universe and is known for preparing for just about everything, but his latest Iron Man armor features one surprising weakness against a common comic book threat - one he's even been able to design ways to combat in the past. Tony Stark may be an expert at designing extreme armor to combat any threat, but he just proved his latest suit is way too basic for the dangers he's likely to face as an Avenger.

Stranded on an unfamiliar alien planet among a colony of refugees led by reformed villain Stilt-Man, Tony has no way of escaping and making it back to his team to take on the threat of Korvac. Meanwhile, the colony finds itself the victim of raids from the planet's native inhabitants: a group of Ultimo robots programmed to literally consume them. Iron Man - relapsing due to the morphine drip installed in his suit to help him heal from his injuries - fails to convince Stilt-Man of a strike against the Ultimos and returns to his living quarters, only to find the psychic manifestation of his partner Hellcat waiting for him.

Using her psionic abilities, Patsy Walker is able to contact Tony across the universe, even peering deeper into his mind against his will and seeing his relapse firsthand. While Hellcat has Iron Man’s best interests in mind, it’s somewhat alarming that she’s able to psychically contact him at all. The Marvel Universe is no stranger to telepathy or even mind control. With so many psychic heroes and villains running around, it’d be perfectly natural for Tony to equip his latest Iron Man armor with its very own psychic blockers. While he certainly has in the past, Iron Man #11 by Christopher Cantwell, Angel Unzueta, and Frank D'Armata shows that’s no longer the case, despite many other, lesser inventors using better technology.

Iron-Man-Telepathy (1)

Tony clearly has the capacity to block out telepaths, and this was shown as recently as Marauders #21 by Gerry Duggan, Matteo Lolli, and Edgar Delgado as well as in X-Force #20 by Ben Percy and Joshua Cassara. During the recent Hellfire Gala, he explicitly mentioned psi-dampeners that kept the incredibly powerful psychic Quentin Quire from prying into his mind. With all the telepaths in the world, let alone on Krakoa, Iron Man knew that there were those who’d stop at nothing to steal the dangerous secrets locked away in his mind.

Patsy’s telepathic capabilities are particularly strong since being awakened by Moondragon, but if she's able to bypass psychic blocks Tony believed were sufficient to fend off mutant minds like Jean Grey and Charles Xavier, the comic has been seriously downplaying what she's capable of. Tony's latest Iron Man suit deliberately takes a more back-to-basics approach, but this still feels like a tremendous oversight on Tony’s part. After all, if simple ceramic plating can block telepaths like Professor X, then there’s no reason for Iron Man to lack robust anti-psychic capabilities.

Iron Man has a plan for everything, but it seems his precautions against psychic attack are sorely lacking. Tony has plenty of other threats on his plate at the moment, but it’s only a matter of time before one lucky Marvel villain takes advantage of Iron Man’s surprising weakness. And when that happens, hopefully Tony’s mind will be as strong as some of Iron Man's more impressive suits.
