Tony Stark is famous for being able to create a suit for any occasion, but one version of Iron Man's armor goes one step further, turning him into a full-fledged Autobot thanks to the efforts of a veteran Transformers artist. The art is part of Marvel's 'Iron Man by Design' initiative, in which some of the best artists in comics redesigned the Armored Avengers according to different prompts.

Iron Man's Transformers armor was created by Tetsuya Aoki, one of the principal designers on the original Transformers toy franchise. The creator has also designed characters for Power RangersMasked Rider, and Ultraman, who recently teamed-up with the Avengers thanks to his move to Marvel Comics. Aoki gained comics experience working on the 2002 manga Angel's Wings, and chose "Japanese robot anime" as the theme for his redesign of Tony Stark's iconic armor.

In Iron Man by Design - a collection of the art from the initiative with creator commentary - Tetsuya Aoki explains that Iron Man's transforming armor is intended to transform from a high-powered interstellar vehicle to a Gundam-style battle mech. The art sees Tony streaking out of the atmosphere with a launching space shuttle in the background, showing the sheer speed Iron Man is able to go in his initial form. While Tony has created several suits capable of sustaining life in space - most notably when he briefly joined the Guardians of the Galaxy - none have shown this type of acceleration, and each has made trade-offs in terms of combat capabilities.

Sadly, only the high-speed form of the Transformers armor was worked up into a final cover (for 2008's Invincible Iron Man #25), but Iron Man by Design provides the sketches for its other two stages - one transforming into its battle form, and the other making short work of an assortment of villains. Heavily armored, the transforming suit was created with toy design sensibilities in mind, adding a layer of realism to how this transformation could actually be made possible in real life. Aoki imagines Tony with "backpacks and lots of weapons," stating that since Iron Man's armor has always been enough to take down his enemies on Earth, he believed a huge canvas like space was necessary to push Iron Man to design something so ambitious.

While Tony has designed suits for space, underwater, and even supernatural combat, he generally has to lose some features in order to properly implement others. In the past, he's even designed a mobile workshop to follow him around, allowing him to adjust his suit as needed. With Tetsuya Aoki's Transformers suit, Iron Man doesn't have that issue, as the entire suit is able to shift between modes, expressing his genius by giving him the best of both worlds all at once.
