Batman and Robin might be considered one of the worst superhero movies of all time for good reason, but you have to at least commend it for being as bombastic as it was. The movie featured a Bat-Credit Card, nipples on the Batsuit, and perhaps most egregiously, retractable ice skates built into Batman and Robin's costume. However, they aren't the first heroes with skates built into their suit. That honor belongs to Iron Man.

In Iron Man's second-ever appearance in Tales of Suspense #40, Stark's scientific prowess is being showcased. At a U.S. Army base, he presents a general with retractable roller skates capable of going 60 miles per hour. He doesn't wear the skates in the panel, but it was the first time his tech was brought up in the comics. It wouldn't be the last time the skates popped up in Iron Man lore.

In 1963's Strange Tales Annual #2, the same jet-powered roller skates can be seen powering the Fox away from Spider-Man and the Human Torch. In Tales of Suspense #45, Iron Man finally wore the skates with his classic, bulky armor.  Stark would continue to wear the roller skates as a part of his Iron Man armor. In Avengers #94, he takes on the Mandroids with his roller skates. In Secret Wars #3, the Iron Man armor features the roller skates to get out him of trouble. In some versions of the skates, they had a surprisingly useful effect: They helped charge his suit.

Tony Stark Skates

Iron Man's undergone some serious changes during his time as a Marvel hero, including adding a nose to his armor. The roller skates are ridiculous, but not the weirdest thing that's ever happened to the character - after all, he did have his armor retract from his skin at one point. Funnily enough, Batman and Robin did rock a pair of jet-powered rolling skates before Iron Man - although, they weren't retractable. In Batman #117, when chasing the villainous Marrow, they quickly snap on a pair of jet-powered skates to keep pace with a motorcycle.

The roller skates are without a doubt among the silliest aspects of Iron Man that have stuck. It's a shame they never made an appearance in the MCU. Although, it's probably for the best considering how the ice skate versions were received in Batman & Robin. There wouldn't be many natural ways to include Iron Man suddenly needing to use jet skates when he can fly.

Logistically, the ice skates make ZERO sense and is a detail fans surely want to forget about, but neither does Batman & Robin. Trying to find reason in Batman needing ice skates of all things in case of emergency is pretty much impossible. At least when Iron Man pops out his skates they actually help him.
