In an unexpected development, Marvel TV boss Jeph Loeb says that Iron Fist season 2 will arrive on Netflix before the end of 2018. Beginning in 2013, Marvel Studios reliably offered up two new films to theaters per year. That pattern changed in 2017, when the MCU started producing three movies per year, an increase which looks to remain in place for the foreseeable future. Similarly, when Marvel TV began producing shows for Netflix in 2015, it set a pattern of two seasons released per year. That then increased to three seasons per year in 2017, with the release of Iron Fist season 1, The Defenders, and The Punisher season 1.
Three seasons of Marvel Netflix series per calendar year looked to continue as the new normal in 2018, with Jessica Jones season 2 already having been released, Luke Cage season 2 set to arrive soon, and Daredevil season 3 having been previously announced to hit before the end of the year. This seemed likely to continue the new schedule of a spring, summer, and fall Marvel release on Netflix.
During a lively Reddit AMA session earlier today, Marvel TV head honcho Jeph Loeb threw a curveball into the mix, while responding to a fan's set of varied questions. One question asked "Can Iron Fist get his suit?," to which Loeb replied: "You'll be very happy with Season 2 coming this year!" At that point, one could have cued a "record scratch" sound effect, as several other Redditors reacted as one might expect to this offhand declaration, with a mix of surprise and excitement.
Naturally, this surprise announcement by Jeph Loeb leads to several questions concerning the immediate future of Marvel TV on Netflix. If the plan is indeed to release four new seasons this year, how far will they be spaced out from each other? In 2017, Iron Fist released in March, Defenders in August, and Punisher in November. So far, 2018 has seen Jessica Jones release in March, with Luke Cage headed to Netflix in June. This led most to believe that Daredevil season 3 would arrive in October or November.
If Iron Fist is joining the 2018 party, it's possible that either it or Daredevil will premiere earlier, maybe in August or September, with the fourth series possibly eyeing a November or December berth. Of course, another possibility is that Marvel won't be increasing its Netflix seasons to four per year, and has instead decided to bump Daredevil season 3 to 2019. After all, both prior Daredevil seasons released early in their respective years. Plus, Daredevil season 3 was never assigned a firm release date in 2018.
However, there's one more option to consider, and that's that Loeb simply misspoke, and that Iron Fist season 2 is coming in 2019. The man manages a lot of things, and it's not impossible to imagine that he might mix up the release schedule in his head while answering rapid fire Reddit questions. For now though, fans are left to assume that Danny Rand's solo series will make its presence felt in 2018.
Iron Fist season 2 looks to be arriving on Netflix sometime before the end of 2018.
