Netflix's Iron Fist star Finn Jones is keen to return as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Danny Rand for one reason. Based on the comic book character created by Roy Thomas and Gil Kane, Iron Fist was the fourth Marvel series developed for Netflix which ultimately led to The Defenders crossover event. First released in March 2017, Iron Fist season 1 was savaged by critics and quickly earned itself a reputation as the weakest of the Marvel Netflix series which also included Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage. While Iron Fist season 2 would ultimately fare much better with critics, the show was canceled in October 2018 and was shortly followed by each of Netflix’s fellow Marvel shows.

Jones’ The Defenders co-star Charlie Cox is currently preparing to headline his own return to the role of Matt Murdock AKA Daredevil in a new series revival on Disney+. While it is not yet clear what Cox’s return might mean for the other members of The Defenders, Jones spoke with the Geekscape podcast and expressed his own desire to return to the role of Danny Rand. Seemingly aware of the negative criticisms leveled at his prior turn in the role, he suggests that he would relish the opportunity “to prove all those motherf**kers wrong” and deliver a version of Danny Rand that fans want to see. Check out his comments below:

I'd love another chance. I care about Danny Rand deeply, I believe in that character, I think there's a lot of work to be done. There's something about the underdog, you know? I love the underdog narrative. I love the ability to prove someone wrong, and I want to prove all those motherfuckers wrong. I know I have it in me and I know I can give the Danny Rand performance that fans want and that is possible.

But I’m really, really, really happy that Charlie got his job back. That, you know, he’s going to be Daredevil again. I think he’s fantastic for the role, and I’m so excited to see him portraying that character back on screen again. From my perspective, I would love to come back, but it would to be in a way that is line with.. that makes most creative, narrative sense. And for me, I’ve been thinking about this, you know, I think it would be really cool to see a Heroes For Hire series.

Finn Jones is Iron Fist

Despite garnering a great deal of positive feedback from their earlier Marvel series, Netflix has long been accused of dropping the ball with Iron Fist’s inaugural season. A study undertaken last year even gave the show the dubious honor of being named Marvel’s worst television show, even beating out the much-maligned Inhumans for the crown. Much of the criticism leveled at the series was the decision to cast Game of Thrones alumnus Jones in a martial arts-heavy role without the benefit of having previous fighting experience. The show’s season 1 stunt coordinator Brett Chan would also allude to Jones’s unwillingness to train for the show’s fight sequences during production.

Other criticisms directed toward Iron Fist have highlighted issues with the show’s pacing and focus on superfluous characters. Iron Fist season 1’s preoccupation with the Meachum family, played by Tom Pelphrey, Jessica Stroup, and David Wenham, often detracted from the journey of Iron First himself. While many of these issues would be addressed and rectified throughout season 2, it would seem that much of the show’s reputational damage had already been done. When the show’s cancelation was finally announced, few Marvel fans mourned the loss of the series anywhere near as much as they did for the subsequent announcements for the other shows in the Defenders line-up.

Of course, Iron Fist was not entirely without its highlights, and Jessica Henwick’s performance as Colleen Wing attracted a great deal of acclaim throughout the show’s two-season run. The decision to have her character assume the power of the Iron Fist at the end of season 2 also hinted at potential plans to further capitalize on her popularity among fans. As for whether Jones will ever get his chance to return as the MCU’s Danny Rand and prove all the doubters wrong, that remains to be seen. However, with Simu Liu already making his mark as Marvel’s latest kung-fu superhero, he will certainly have a tough job proving himself worthy of the role.
