RuPaul's Drag Race season 15 kicked off on January 6 with a high-energy talent show full of entertainment, but while most of the 16 queens impressed RuPaul and the judges, Irene "The Alien" DuBois' moment missed the mark in execution but excelled in memorability. Although RPDR started with a small cast and an even smaller budget in 2009, the series has expanded over the years to become a global franchise with dozens of Emmy's and millions of fans. Although Willow Pill took home the title of America's Next Drag Superstar on RPDR season 14, it didn't take long for viewers to speculate who would join RPDR season 15 in 2023.

When the cast of RPDR season 15 was finally revealed at the end of 202, fans were excited to see a mix of iconic queens like Sasha Colby and identical twins Sugar and Spice among other quirky contestants like Anetra, Jax, and Irene, who is the drag sister of RPDR season 14 finalist Bosco. Like previous seasons, RPDR season 15 introduced the 16 queens to viewers with two iconic challenges: a photo shoot with the Pit Crew, and a talent show meant to showcase the very best of drag. Although several queens used their one-minute performances to their advantage, Irene's universal talent left RuPaul, guest judge Ariana Grande, fans at home, and Irene's competitors confused and secondhand embarrassed.

Irene DuBois' Ice Water Skit Didn't Make A Splash

When it comes to RPDR's annual talent show, most queens decide to try and lipsync the house down, while others take an unconventional route with standup comedy or real-time sewing. While Marcia Marcia Marcia's ballet routine and ode to judge Ross Matthews was a hit among fans, Irene DuBois' decision to pour a glass of ice water quickly resembled a car crash that is hard to look at, but impossible to turn away from. Irene's sense of humor was on full display, and it was obvious what she was trying to accomplish with her simple tutorial, but the in-you-face joke ultimately fell flat with off-timed beats and an unnecessary music change.

Irene DuBois' Ironic Talent Unintentionally Made Herstory

Although Irene's glass of water missed the mark on RPDR season 15, she easily accomplished what many queens strive to achieve: be memorable and leave a distinct mark on the competition. Is being able to pour ice and water into a glass better than an iconic lipsync reveal like Sasha Velour's rose petals? No. But did Irene's lackluster performance immediately stand out due to its ridiculousness and ill-timed placement? In the words of Gia Gunn, absolutely. Irene's talent had all the right components and could've been a winner if it happened during any other challenge, but since the talent show wasn't meant to be a display of irony, Irene was quickly sent to the bottom two alongside Amethyst.

While Bosco's sister, unfortunately, became the first queen to sashay away on RPDR season 15, it's safe to say that Irene's talent show performance will continue to be discussed throughout the season. Between Sasha's long-awaited introduction on RPDR, a potential lipsync between Sugar and Spice, and a slew of celebrity judges ready to sit on the panel, the popular competition has a long way to go before America's Next Drag Superstar is crowned. Irene may not have won, but that doesn't mean she didn't go home a winner in her own right.
