Apple is reportedly readying a larger iPhone SE with 5G connectivity, but not anytime soon. According to a new rumor, the company is expanding the budget-friendly lineup starting next year. The new report backs up previous rumors that a new iPhone SE is not coming later this year and provides a new helping of information about the upcoming iPhone SE models, including how big the screens will be.

Last year, Apple launched its first iPhone SE model since the series debuted back in 2016. As with the original iPhone SE, the iPhone SE 2020 drew in consumers with a fairly simple premise: the classic Apple experience packaged at a more affordable price point. In terms of hardware, the new iPhone repackaged much of what made the iPhone 8 a great smartphone for Apple fans. In terms of price, it starts at only $399, creating a huge gap between the regular iPhone lineup and the iPhone SE. Further, it drastically lowers the barriers to entry for any mobile user who wants an iPhone. Of course, amid the current generation's popularity, more rumors have cropped up about when the next iPhone SE is coming.

Now, notable Apple leaker Ross Young has revealed some details about the upcoming iPhone SE. He says the next iPhone SE, slated to launch next year, will come with the same 4.7-inch LCD screen as the current model and that it will come with 5G connectivity. Also, after next year's model, an iPhone SE coming in 2023 will reportedly sport a much larger 6.1-inch screen with a punch-hole camera rather than the iconic iPhone notch.

What Does This Mean For The iPhone SE?

Previous rumors have already hinted at what Young has confirmed: that the next iPhone SE will have the same screen size and that an iPhone SE Plus is coming but not this year. However, this is the first time that a potential screen size has emerged. Give the information already available, Apple is likely staying with its current strategy for next year: a smaller iPhone with a smaller price.

However, a 6.1-inch iPhone SE Plus presents a new opportunity for Apple. If the detail is true, the Plus variant will be bigger than the current iPhone 12 mini's screen size (which sports a 5.4-inch screen). The iPhone SE 2020 was a huge hit for those switching over from Android devices. With a new form factor coming into the series, switchers might have more choices going forward. Though much of the smartphone's details are unknown, it looks like Apple is looking to build a more expansive iPhone SE lineup for those who want to dip their toes into the Apple ecosystem.
