The iPhone SE probably won't see a big design change in 2022 despite various rumors that suggest that Apple will update it with a new look. As the lowest-cost model, the iPhone SE is a great choice for new Apple Watch owners that might be switching from Android and it works seamlessly with the entire Apple ecosystem, just like its more expensive siblings.

Originally launched in 2016, the iPhone SE was Apple's second budget smartphone. The first low-cost model was the iPhone 5C, which was Apple's first and last to use plastic on the back. The 'C' designation stood for color and the device came in blue, green, yellow, pink, and white, another first for Apple. The iPhone SE returned to premium build-quality with an aluminum back and introduced a flat-edged design that looked quite a bit like Apple's more recent iPhone 12 and 13 series while keeping the price quite low. It was well received and remained available from Apple's website until late 2018.

Rumors have been circulating for months about Apple removing the Home button on the iPhone SE. Since technology usually moves forward, most tended to believe the button was going away in 2022. However, an updated Tweet from Apple leaker Dylan, who has a good track for accuracy, reversed course and now says that won't happen until 2024. Looking beyond the rumors, it makes sense for Apple to keep the same design for its iPhone SE for the foreseeable future. Visually, it can be seen that this isn't a flagship iPhone, providing consumers with an incentive to reach for the entry-level iPhone 14. Apple's budget model appeals to an audience that isn't as concerned with camera specs or carrying the latest tech but do want a good and reliable iPhone. From Apple's perspective, Face ID is more expensive than Touch ID and since the iPhone SE is priced very low at $399, cutting costs is a necessity.

Apple iPhone SE 2020 Second Generation

Another 2022 iPhone SE rumor that has persisted is the upgrade to an A15 processor. This is Apple's latest and best smartphone chip and the same one used in the iPhone 13. A budget model might be expected to get an older chip, but the 2020 iPhone SE was powered by the A13 which was the best available at that time. 5G is expected on this new smartphone, bringing faster mobile internet connectivity at a lower cost. While not much else is expected to change with the 2022 model, an A15 is a big step up from the A13 and benefits from better power efficiency which would stretch the battery life of the upcoming iPhone SE.

With a 4.7-inch screen and a Home button, it should look the same as the current model. The iPhone 14 is not expected to have a mini size as the iPhone 12 and 13 did, so this will make the iPhone SE unique as the smallest model. Keeping the Home button provides a nice option for older users, children, and users with disabilities who might not appreciate the requirement for the use of gestures for basic navigation. The button is an easy and obvious way to switch to another app or return to the Home screen. Cost savings, along with providing an option to choose a smaller size and physical button, very likely means the 2022 iPhone SE will keep the same design.
