With months to go before Apple unveils the iPhone 14 series, a rumor just shed all-new details on the iPhone 15 Pro's upgraded camera hardware. The rumor mill is unavoidable in the tech space, though it's especially active for certain releases throughout the year. No one's chomping at the bit for all the latest details on a new Galaxy A handset from Samsung, but everyone wants to know what's happening with the new Galaxy S flagship.

This is especially true with the iPhone. Every year without fail, reports start speculating what the next-generation iPhone will have to offer. Some of these are 100 percent accurate, others are flat-out wrong, and some exist right in the middle. Rumors of a 120Hz display and better cameras for the iPhone 13 Pro turned out to be true, but claims of an always-on display proved fruitless.

In a new report from Apple analyst Jeff Pu, the rumor mill keeps chugging with new details regarding the iPhone 15. According to Pu's report shared by MacRumors"at least one iPhone 15 model launched in 2023 will feature a periscope camera system." It's believed that this periscope tech will be reserved for the iPhone 15 Pro variants and will enable optical zooming capabilities up to 10x. That's a considerable improvement over the 3x optical zoom in the iPhone 13 Pro — and should put the iPhone 15 Pro in line with zoom capabilities offered by Android phones for a couple of years now.

No Periscope Zoom For The iPhone 14 Models

Apple iPhone 13 Rendered Orange

While this latest report doesn't comment about a possible periscope camera for the iPhone 14 handsets, it's becoming more and more likely that we'll have to wait until 2023 before this tech reaches the iPhone. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said as much last month, also confirming a periscope camera for the iPhone 15 with no mention of it for the iPhone 14 family. Apple's rumored to increase the iPhone 14's primary camera to a 48MP sensor, but periscope zooming will likely have to wait for the iPhone 15 series.

With two analysts now affirming this idea, it'll be interesting to see how Apple handles its implementation of a periscope camera on the iPhone. Periscope camera tech isn't new in the smartphone world anymore. Samsung's used it on the Galaxy S since early 2020, and other companies like Huawei and Oppo have used these sensors, too. With Apple apparently not jumping on the bandwagon until 2023, one has to believe it's doing something to improve upon the periscope cameras available today. How much of an improvement that actually is remains to be seen, but regardless, this is a story worth keeping an eye on over the next year.
