The iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone 14 Pro Max are the biggest models in Apple's new iPhone 14 series, but which one of them is the better buy? Apple didn't launch an iPhone 14 mini this year owing to poor sales of its previous mini models. Instead, it launched the iPhone 14 Plus, which is a bigger version of the standard iPhone 14.

The last time Apple used the 'Plus' suffix was in 2017 when it launched the iPhone 8 Plus. However, evidence has shown that Apple originally planned to use the iPhone 14 Max moniker instead of iPhone 14 Plus. Apple is expected to launch an iPhone 15 Plus next year, so this clearly isn't a one-off model.

The iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone 14 Pro Max have several features in common despite the significant difference in price. They both have a 6.7-inch screen, a 4,323mAh battery (4,325mAh for the iPhone 14 Plus), stereo speakers, Face ID, IP68 rating, Ultra Wideband (UWB), and support the same charging (wired and wireless) speeds. However, the iPhone 14 Pro Max is the more premium model. First, its OLED display is of a higher grade as it is an LTPO panel with a 120Hz refresh rate and a peak brightness of 2,000 nits just like the Apple Watch Ultra. In addition, the iPhone 14 Pro Max has the new Dynamic Island and support for Always-on display. It also has a stainless steel frame.

On the other hand, the OLED display of the iPhone 14 Plus has a slightly lower resolution and a lower peak brightness of 1,200 nits. It doesn't have a high refresh rate, lacks support for Always-on display, and has an aluminum frame. Apple has also distinguished both phones by giving them different processors. The new Apple A16 Bionic is at the heart of the iPhone 14 Pro Max, and it is paired with 6GB of RAM and up to 1TB of storage. In contrast, the iPhone 14 Plus uses the Apple A15 Bionic from the iPhone 13 Pro series with a 5-core GPU. The iPhone 14 Plus has 6GB of RAM but maxes out at 512GB of storage.

Another area where the iPhone 14 Pro Max has the upper hand is in the camera department. Like the iPhone 14 Pro, it has a 48MP main camera that can capture more details than the 12MP sensor of the iPhone 14 Plus. While both phones have a 12MP ultra-wide camera, the iPhone 14 Pro Max also boasts a 12MP telephoto camera with 3x zoom and a LiDAR scanner for depth sensing and 3D scanning. The Pro model is also capable of shooting and editing in ProRes.

The iPhone 14 Pro Max is meant for those who want the best iPhone available. It has a better display, superior cameras, and a more powerful chipset. However, it costs $200 more than the iPhone 14 Plus. On the other hand, the iPhone 14 Plus is great for those who don't care about a high refresh rate, the latest processor, and the best cameras. Its large display is great for watching videos or mobile gaming, while the battery life is as good as the top-end iPhone 14 Pro Max. This makes the iPhone 14 Plus a great option for those who want a big-screen iPhone without breaking the bank.
