Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has seemingly confirmed earlier rumors that the iPhone 14 will ship without a big notch unlike its predecessors. Even though the iPhone 13 only launched a few months ago, rumors about its successor have been coming in thick and fast, with the suggestion that the next-gen iPhone will ship without a massive notch being one of the most persistent rumors so far.

While most Android phones have long ditched the notch in favor of a punch-hole design, Apple has been slow to adopt the same look. The company was also slow to adopt larger screen sizes, sticking with a 4.7-inch display for years. However, with media consumption on mobile devices expanding exponentially, Apple eventually caught up with the times by introducing larger display panels to its iPhone lineup.

In the latest installment of his 'Power On' newsletter, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman seemingly confirmed the rumor that Apple is planning to ditch the massive notch with the iPhone 14. Instead, the device will reportedly ship with a "hole-punch-sized notch" that will increase the screen space on the next-gen iPhone. Gurman did not offer any more details about the upcoming device, but the new design will certainly be a welcome change for most people, given than the notch looks outdated and takes up a significant amount of prime real-estate on the front.

What's A Hole-Punch-Sized Notch?

It will be interesting to see what "hole-punch-sized notch" actually means, and what kind of a design the iPhone 14 will ship with. While the phrase could simply mean a standard punch-hole camera, that will make it difficult for Apple to place all the Face ID sensors in the tiny circular cutout. It could also mean multiple cutouts or a slightly larger pill-shaped 'notch' similar to what has been tried by some Android manufacturers over the years, allowing Apple room to shoehorn the Face ID sensors in next to the front-facing camera. However, all this is speculative at this stage, so it remains to be seen how the design will eventually look.

Gurman's newsletter also claimed that Apple's next-gen iPhone SE will offer 5G connectivity, while confirming that the company is working on a smaller Mac Pro and updated Mac mini powered by Apple Silicon for this year. Apple is also said to be working on a new large-screened iMac Pro, as well as a new, redesigned MacBook Air, and a new entry-level MacBook Pro, all of which will also be powered by Apple silicon. With a whole host of new iPhone and Mac products rocking new designs and powered by powerful chips, 2022 is already looking like an interesting year for Apple aficionados.
