The Apple iPhone 12 mini and the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE both start at $699, and both come with 5G support. Historically, the phones that these companies make have different features and fanbases. However, it is important to compare and contrast these new devices in order to be informed on which smartphone is worth a purchase at this price point.

Samsung has been making Galaxy smartphones since 2009, with the S series being a line of high-end smartphones that, along with the Galaxy Note series, are Samsung's flagship smartphones. On the other hand, Apple has been producing its iPhone line since 2007, making the company one of the first to produce smartphones. The Galaxy S20 FE and the iPhone 12 mini are likely to be two popular phones in 2020 and 2021.

The Galaxy S20 FE's base model comes with a formidable 128GB of storage and a microSD slot for storage expansion. In contrast, the iPhone 12 mini's base model only boasts 64GB with no microSD slot for storage expansion. Next up is design. The iPhone 12 mini features a new squared-off aluminum design which might be the most visually appealing of the two. However, the large camera notch at the top of the screen continues to be a design quirk that some users may not appreciate. The Galaxy S20 FE has an aluminum frame and a plastic back making durability an unlikely concern. As far as displays go, the iPhone 12 mini has the smallest display at only 5.4 inches, but leads with the best pixels per inch, at 476. The Galaxy S20 FE has a nice 6.5-inch display that comes in behind at 407 pixels per inch, although it is a 120Hz screen.

Other iPhone 12 mini & Galaxy S20 FE Differences

In terms of battery life, Apple claims the iPhone 12 mini can deliver up to 10 hours when streaming video, up to 15 hours of on-device video, and up to 50 hours of audio playback. These numbers are lower than what was available with the iPhone 11, but one must take into account that the iPhone 12 mini is a much smaller phone. The Galaxy S20 FE features a 4,500 mAh battery and is rated to offer 15.5 hours of video playback on a single charge. Cameras are another important feature of a smartphone. The iPhone 12 mini features a 12-megapixel f/1.6 wide-angle and a 12-megapixel f/2.4 ultra-wide rear camera, along with a 12-megapixel f/2.2 front camera. The Galaxy S20 FE has three rear cameras, consisting of a 12-megapixel f/1.8 wide-angle, a 12-megapixel f/2.2 ultra-wide, and an 8-megapixel f/2.0 telephoto, along with a 32-megapixel f/2.0 selfie camera.

These two phones will certainly be top contenders for smartphone sales this year. Ultimately, both of these phones will likely be great options for the average smartphone user. However, the Galaxy S20 FE wins the most points as it leads in storage size, screen size and camera lenses. While the iPhone 12 mini's superior feature is its smaller size, those who prefer a large screen, lots of storage and excellent camera lenses, will likely want to consider the Galaxy S20 FE. Then again, those wanting a high definition display on a smaller screen, as well as those more keen on iOS than Android, should opt for the iPhone 12 mini.
