The iPhone 12 mini is not only the smallest new Apple phone to come through, but also one of the worst sellers, according to recent reports. In spite of the smaller iPhone gaining considerable attention when announced, it looks like consumers are still opting for the other models when purchasing a new phone, and one of its main selling points also appears to be its major weakness.

The iPhone 12 series was unveiled in late 2020. In total there were four models announced, consisting of the mini, standard, Pro and Pro Max. Generally speaking, the mini and standard models commonly differ to the Pro and Pro Max in many ways, while size is one of the more defining differences between the mini and standard iPhone models. With a 5.4-inch screen, the iPhone 12 mini is significantly smaller than the 6.1-inch standard iPhone 12’s display.

According to Reuters and data from Counterpoint Research, only five-percent of iPhone 12 sales in the United States for the first half of January were for the iPhone 12 mini. Considering the data is specifically for the newer iPhone models, the suggestion is the other three iPhone 12 options have all sold considerably better. While the data in the report is focused on 2021 so far, a similar report in early January suggested iPhone 12 mini only accounted for six-percent of U.S. iPhone sales during October and November of last year. When taken together, the overall suggestion is the iPhone 12 mini is just not proving popular with consumers.

According to the information coming through, it appears the iPhone 12 mini’s major problem is its smaller size. Essentially, buyers are opting to go with larger phones in general, and for a variety of reasons, including better browsing and an improved video-streaming experience. This trend is not specific to iPhone, but with the iPhone 12 mini being as small as it is, the phone’s appeal is far less than the other iPhone 12 models, which vary in screen size between 6.1 and 6.7 inches.

Although the weaker sales could lead to Apple reconsidering how often it wants to update the mini version of the iPhone, it is still a device that has a place in the market. While the general trend appears to be for larger smartphones, not everyone will want a device with a screen size greater than six inches. For some, Apple’s iPhone 12 mini will be the right option, whether it’s for easier carrying in a pocket, or for those with smaller hands in general.
