Apple is heavily rumored to launch a redesigned iPad Pro next year, and thanks to a set of alleged renders, the world might finally have a look at the company’s upcoming flagship tablet. It was predicted all the way back in June that Apple is working on a redesign for the 2022 iPad Pro that ditches the sharp, all-metal looks in favor of a glass back akin to the iPhone portfolio.

An iPad Pro with a glass rear panel sounds like an aesthetic victory, and an open invitation to smudges, but adding a glass back will also enable support for wireless charging. If that is the case, Apple’s next expensive tablet is likely to be officially welcomed into the MagSafe family. There have been no concrete leaks regarding the internal upgrades, but a next-gen M-series chip seems like a safe bet.

Shared by MyDrivers, it is claimed these images are renders of the 2022 iPad Pro. A quick glimpse at the design suggests that buyers are in for a huge surprise. The bezels have been slimmed down significantly, making them thinner than they've ever been on an iPad so far. However, the thinning of the bezels appears to come with the same design compromise it did on the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models launched earlier this year. That compromise is a notch. The design doesn’t look much different from the leaked renders of Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra, save for one key difference — the positioning of the notch. On the Apple tablet, the notch and its accompanying hardware have been positioned with portrait usage in mind. In contrast, Samsung's notch focuses on landscape usage as the top priority.

A Makeover Too Good To Be True?

Apple has likely gone with a notch to accommodate the Face ID and selfie camera hardware. The form factor remains loyal to the boxy, square-ish profile with sharp edges. Aside from a glass-made rear panel, another key change is the camera hardware. It appears that the iPad Pro is going to graduate from a dual-camera system to a triple camera array similar to the ‘Pro’ iPhone models. The setup will most likely be a familiar wide + ultra-wide + telephoto zoom configuration, while the LiDAR for AR applications looks like it's here to stay as well. A telephoto camera on an iPad sounds strange and begs the question as to why someone would want a zoom camera on a giant tablet in the first place.

The report also mentions a switch from an aluminum to a titanium enclosure due to the latter being stronger and more corrosion-resistant. Apple is reportedly planning to do the same for the iPhone 14 series, as per a JP Morgan Chase investor report (via MacRumors). If one were to take an educated guess, the 2022 iPad Pro will come armed with the next-gen Apple M2 silicon, the same chip that will also make its way to the wildly anticipated MacBook Air refresh next year. With all the aforementioned upgrades suggested for its next ‘Pro’ tablet, Apple will most likely be charging a small fortune.
