Apple has released the iPadOS 15.6 update, and among the slew of changes it brings to the table, there is also a fix for charging issues plaguing the 6th-generation iPad mini. Earlier this month, multiple reports emerged online detailing that the iPad mini 6 started having charging issues after users installed the iPadOS 15.5 build.
Following reports about the problem, Apple reportedly sent an internal memo to authorized service providers confirming that the issue couldn’t be solved by trying to fix the port or replace the battery. Instead, the company relayed temporary advice asking users to restart the device if they encountered charging issues. Moreover, Apple confirmed that it was looking into the issue and would share more information soon.
Well, it appears that Apple has resolved the issue, or so says the official changelog of iPadOS 15.6 that has just started rolling out to all compatible devices. “Fixes an issue where iPad mini (6th generation) may not detect a charger or other USB-C accessory,” Apple mentions in the release notes. As per user complaints on Reddit and support forums, the core issue was that the tablet abruptly stopped charging, and would only return to normal after powering it off for about a minute before restarting.
Troubleshooting iPad Charging Woes
Of course, Apple advises users to stick with its own supplied chargers, but there’s a valid reason behind it. Cheap third-party chargers often lack protections against sudden current surges or high temperatures, which may end up causing serious damage. For users deeply into the Apple ecosystem, the charging adapter situation must also be taken care of. However, if an iPad continues to give charging troubles, it might be worth restarting it. For iPads with a Touch ID home button, press and hold it simultaneously with the power button at the top to restart the device. For new iPads lacking the Touch ID button, simply press and hold the power button at the top until the power off slider appears on the screen.
Do keep in mind that this is a clean restart, and not a hard reset. Another common issue that not many users pay attention to is a clogged charging port. Over time, lint and dust tend to accumulate in the port, and they prevent efficient power transfer from a cable. Canned air usually solves the problem. But if there is any semi-solid gunk or small particle tightly stuck in there, a trip to a repair outlet might be necessary to ensure that a DIY repair doesn’t damage the fragile parts inside. In the case of the iPad mini 6 though, it's been established that the charging issues are very much software related, and an update to iPadOS 15.6 should fix the problem.
