New horror movie The Invitation is getting an R-rated cut that viewers can watch at home. The film is directed by Jessica M. Thompson, and a PG-13 version of the film can currently be seen in theaters. Nathalie Emmanuel (Game of Thrones) and Thomas Doherty (Gossip Girl) star in the film that follows Evie (played by Emmanuel), connecting with long-lost family members for the first time who prove to be more sinister than initial appearances may convey.

In an interview with Bloody Disgusting, Thompson discusses that the version of the film that will be released at home will differ from the theatrical release, and will be R-rated. Thompson notes that the R-rated version contains more blood, more prosthetics by Iván Pohárnok, more swearing, more sex, and more gore. Thompson also teases that something shocking happens to the great-grandmother, Emmaline, in the version that viewers will be able to see at home. Full quotes from Thompson can be read below:

"The PG 13 version is what’s going to be out in cinemas, but the R version is actually going to be online on the streamers. There’s more prosthetics in that one."

"Yeah, a little bit more blood, a little bit more of that, but I’m someone who thinks you lose the tension as soon as you reveal your monster. I feel like the longer you can hold it off, the better. So there’s still that keeping of mystery, but I will say there’s a bit more gore. There’s a little bit more blood. There’s a little more swearing, and the sex scene is a good chunk longer. These are all the fun things we get to do with our R-rated version."

"But yeah, something happens to Emmaline, the great-grandmother, that I think is quite a shock, and Iván Pohárnok’s prosthetics are fantastic."

Those looking for a slightly more family-friendly horror flick will have to see the version of the film currently in theaters. Those craving as much Invitation gore as Thompson is willing to give them will have to wait for when the movie is available to stream at home, and may even want to see the film in theaters to compare the two versions. The R-rated version is certainly fitting for The Invitation, as a vampire story isn't complete without more blood, gore, and sexual tension.
