Amazon has renewed Invincible for seasons 2 & 3. An adult animated series, which premiered in March of this year, Invincible is based on the superhero comic book character created by Robert Kirkman and artist Cory Walker. It follows 17-year-old Mark Grayson (voiced by Steven Yeun). Seemingly a normal teenager, Mark has to deal with the fact that his father – Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons) – is the most powerful superhero on the planet. Once he develops powers of his own, on his seventeenth birthday, Mark begins to discover that his father’s legacy might not be as heroic as it initially appears.

With a voice cast that includes Sandra Oh, Gillian Jacobs, Andrew Rannells, Zazie Beetz, Walton Goggins, Jason Mantzoukas, and Zachary Quinto, among many other notable guests, Invincible season 1 has garnered heavy praise for its animation style and unabashedly bloody action sequences. It has drawn comparisons to The Boys, another satirical superhero show from Amazon, and has found a similarly devoted audience. Ahead of its season finale on April 30, a trailer was unveiled that previewed an epic confrontation. But the action won’t stop there.

Amazon has announced that it has renewed Invincible for two more seasons. The series will continue to stream exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories. Vernon Sanders, the Co-Head of Television Studios at Amazon Studios, praised Kirkman’s storytelling approach and the show’s voice for delivering on the expectations of fans. For his part, Kirkman noted in a statement that he was excited to continue the story of Invincible for at least two more seasons.

Omni man Mark invincible

So far, Invincible has been unafraid to deviate from its source material in ways both big and small. In terms of its narrative, the animated adaptation has altered details from character deaths to pivotal relationship moments. This serves as a sign that, moving forward, the show will likely continue to make changes for the benefit of the show’s longevity. This has led to plenty of interest in where Invincible might go after its season finale and beyond. With this latest news, although expected given its success, fans can now be ensured that Mark’s adventures will continue for the foreseeable future.

The renewal is a positive in a different sense. Rather than getting a renewal for several seasons, potentially stretching the story beyond its natural ending point, Kirkman and the decision-makers at Amazon Studios can make the call down the road as to whether Invincible is better served by a relatively short run or if there are still more avenues to explore. For the time being though, it’s worth celebrating the bit of good news for an adaptation that has already made a big splash.
