Invincible’s season 1 finale trailer teases an epic confrontation. Based on the comic book character of the same name by Robert Kirkman, the Amazon Prime Video series premiered in March. It focuses on Mark Grayson, who was a normal teenager until he developed superpowers after his seventeenth birthday. Mark has to balance his newfound abilities, and subsequent responsibilities, with a desire to maintain his usual social life. His difficulties are confounded by the fact that his father, Nolan Grayson, is the most powerful superhero on the planet.

The penultimate episode brought plenty of storylines to the fore, offering an ostensible conclusion to some arcs while also teasing others. In particular, the finale will turn its attention to a showdown that’s been building since the premiere between Mark (Invincible) and Nolan (Omni-Man). A new trailer for the finale places this confrontation front and center.

Ahead of the season finale on Friday, InvincibleHQ released a short trailer on Twitter. The caption warned that, even for fans who think they know what’s coming, they won’t be ready for what the last episode of season 1 entails. This is backed up by the trailer, which begins with an encounter between Mark and Nolan before lingering on the shocked expressions of various characters. Check it out below:

The penultimate episode of the series packed plenty of surprises. Most notably, in what has been regarded as the best episode of Invincible so far, Donald Ferguson is killed off. This is a shift from the source material, which features Donald as a minor recurring character. Another change was witnessed in Amber. Unlike in the comics, where she’s charmed by the reveal of Mark as Invincible, the last-ditch moment of honesty does little to alleviate Amber’s anger at Mark’s continued dishonesty. All these shifts, big and small, may indeed set the stage for an ending that even seasoned fans of the comics won’t anticipate.

It will also be interesting to see how the finale changes the extremely positive reputation of Invincible, if it does at all. Although it’s been said that the animated comic book adaptation is darker and grimmer than The Boys, also an Amazon adaptation of a superhero story, the animated series has been significantly lighter in its tone. At times, given its focus on the teenaged character of Mark Grayson, the show occasionally comes across as a teen drama spliced with gory moments. The season 1 finale of Invincible could potentially offer a window into whether the series fully intends to embrace its darker side. Considering that the trailer hypes up an epic conclusion, that may very well be possible.
