Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Invincible season 1

Steven Yeun, star of Amazon's breakout animated hit, Invincible, gives an update on the show's highly anticipated season 2. Invincible is an animated adaptation of the long-running comic book series of the same name, which was initially created by The Walking Dead's creator, Robert Kirkman, and ran for 15 years from 2003 to 2018. Amazon's Invincible has garnered acclaim from both critics and audiences alike since its release in March of last year. Despite its unassuming art style, the series explores mature themes and showcases some of the most brutal violence in any superhero television show out there.

Invincible's first season ends with an action-packed finale that pits the titular hero (Yeun) against his father, Omni-man (J.K. Simmons). Omni-Man is one of the standout characters from the first season. The show initially presents him as a classic, Superman-esque hero, but as the season unfolds, his more nefarious motivations quickly come into play. By the end of the final episode, Omni-Man's story is left open-ended as a tantalizing tease for what's in store for future seasons (of course, for those who haven't already been convinced to start reading the source material).

In a recent interview with Collider, Yeun gave a long-awaited update on Invincible season 2. The actor says that development hasn't started, but it will "at some point soon." He also reveals that Kirkman himself believes season 2 will "be even better than Season 1." Check out Yeun's full statements below:

We haven’t started. I know we’re starting at some point soon. I’ve talked to Robert [Kirkman], here and there. He’s super excited about it. He thinks Season 2 is gonna be even better than Season 1, which I have no doubt about. If you go to his source material, Invincible is an incredible comic, and just thinking about how much story hasn’t been told from that run, it’s gonna be bonkers. I’m really excited about it.

Invincible flying in episode 4

Although season 2 has yet to begin development, it's reassuring to hear just how closely Kirkman is to the project. While there have certainly been successful adaptations of literature without their respective creator's involvement – most notably, Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of Stephen King's The Shining – those tend to be the exception more than the rule. Kirkman's optimism should be taken as a good sign of the quality of season 2.

Between Invincible and The Boys, Amazon has carved a niche corner of the superhero market focused on superhero genre deconstructions. Although the two franchises are based on comic books created by different authors, they both critically (and often, satirically) examine tropes that frequently pop up across various superhero stories. Amazon's properties can provide their own unique comic book offerings while larger studios like Marvel and DC continue to churn out more straightforward superhero blockbusters year after year. Hopefully, Invincible season 2 will prove that Amazon's success was more than just a lightning-in-a-bottle moment.
