Invincible's Sequids storyline already teased a new hero for season 2 of the Amazon Prime Video show. Shortly after concluding the long-running comic story, Robert Kirkman returned to the world of Invincible for an animated series. The first season stayed quite close to the source material in terms of the general arc between Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun) and Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons). Kirkman also made sure to set up other characters from the comics who will go on to have a bigger role as Invincible continues.

One of the many storylines featured in Invincible season 1 that will have a lasting effect on the series and its characters came with the introduction of the Sequids. The parasitic aliens were located on Mars and Invincible traveled there to ensure an astronaut expedition went as planned. This led Mark to meet the Martians who kidnapped the astronauts and learn about the Sequids' abilities. Although it appeared that the astronauts were rescued by Invincible, the episode showed that this wasn't the case. The astronaut named Rus Livingston became a host for a Sequid and remained on Mars, while a member of the Martian alien race secretly took Livingston's place with the return crew, as it was part of a rebel group that wanted to free the Sequids from slavery.

The replacement of Rus Livingston by the Sequid was only teased in Invincible for a few seconds, but this storyline evolves to see the alien become one of Earth's new heroes. The unnamed Martian originally enjoys relaxing on Earth after escaping the planet that he hated. He tries to live Rus's life without anyone noticing, but he quickly realizes that he doesn't really know what this means. He loses Rus's job at NASA and was evicted from his apartment before realizing that he can do more with his time on Earth than just blend in. As a Martian, he possesses the ability to shape-shift and take on the appearance and physical powers of those he imitates. This leads him to become a hero known as Shapesmith.

Once Shapesmith decides to be a superhero, it doesn't take long for him to leave his mark. Shapesmith's very first time playing hero came when he took on the Lizard League. If it wasn't obvious based on their name, the villainous group is comprised of a roster of villains with lizard-inspired names and abilities, such as King Lizard or Komodo Dragon. This immediately gave Shapesmith some credibility in the superhero world, and it wasn't long before he was working with the Guardians of the Globe. He battles super-villains like Doc Seismic with them and helps save the world from other potentially devastating threats.

With Invincible season 1 teasing Shapesmith's arrival on Earth, there is a strong chance that he becomes a hero in season 2. There is no shortage of villains set up during the Invincible season 1 finale. While Mark will take on several of them presumably, Shapesmith can lend a helping hand from time to time as well. His journey to become a hero could even be how Kirkman plans to bring the Lizard League to the series. And with the Sequids poised to return, as well, Shapesmith can be around to experience the consequences of swapping lives with Rus Livingston. Perhaps he'll even play a pivotal role in determining how to stop a potential Sequids invasion of Earth in Invincible season 2.
