Invincible creators believe that Invincible could defeat some of the most powerful superheroes, raising the stakes for season 2. Created by Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Otterly, Invincible is an adaptation of their Image Comics series of the same name. Invincible follows 17-year-old Mark Grayson who starts to develop superpowers and must come to terms with who his super-powerful father Omni-Man really is. With a season 1 finale cliffhanger, fans eagerly await Invincible’s return in late 2023.

Since Invincible inherited his father’s alien superpowers, he holds incredible power that could be used for destruction. However, Invincible ultimately rejects his father which leads his father to abandon his post on Earth and neglect his duties to the Viltrum Empire, leaving Mark in a vulnerable situation. This situation sets Mark up for a brutal Invincible season 2 where he may have to fight a fellow Viltrumite warrior. Given the creators’ confidence in Invincible’s abilities, the possibilities for Invincible season 2 are endless.

In an interview with Skybound, co-creator Ryan Otterly argued that Invincible could beat Thanos and Superman. Otterly explains how Invincible could potentially defeat Thanos: “I think even with [the Infinity Gauntlet.] He’s about to snap and he just breaks the fingers. Rips the glove. Now Invincible has the gauntlet.” While Invincible’s other creators Kirkman and Walker don’t agree, the possibility that Invincible could be that powerful adds a little extra drama to impending proceedings, especially the fights.

Invincible season 1 has already displayed how powerful Mark’s father Omni-Man is in many brutal fight scenes. The fight between Omni-Man and Invincible also proves how much damage these two alien beings can do to each other. If Invincible fights another Viltrumite warrior, as he does in the comics, the stakes will be similar to an opponent like Thanos or Superman. With rumors that Conquest will be season 2’s main villain, it seems fans will get a fight of epic portions in Invincible season 2.

Why Invincible's Characters Need To Be So Powerful

Since Invincible parodies superhero conventions, it requires the Invincible series to have ridiculously powerful characters. Since Mark’s namesake is that he is literally invincible, the stakes have to be high for him to live up to his name. Given the impossibility of his powers, his opponents must also be worthy of him for the series to be exciting. With Invincible season 1’s critical success, it seems that Invincible is doing a stellar time providing an entertaining superhero story while parodying the genre’s tropes.

While Invincible will likely never fight Thanos or Superman, he will fight worthy foes in Invincible season 2. It will be hard to beat the emotional stakes of Mark fighting his father, such as in the finale of season 1, but Invincible season 2 has the potential to be out of his world. Invincible season 2 is expected to be available to stream on Amazon Prime sometime in late 2023.
