Invincible’s Robert Kirkman teases the arrival of Angstrom Levy for season 2. Premiering in March of this year, Invincible is an adult animated series that’s based on the superhero comic book character created by Kirkman and artist Cory Walker. It follows 17-year-old Mark Grayson (voiced by Steven Yeun). Seemingly a normal teenager, Mark has to deal with the fact that his father, Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons), is the most powerful superhero on the planet. But once he develops powers of his own on his seventeenth birthday and takes on the name Invincible, Mark begins to discover that his father’s legacy might not be as perfect as it seems to be.
Invincible season 1 set up the second installment in many ways, closing on a montage of all the villains that the heroic high school student has to face. With the news that the adaptation has been renewed for two more seasons, and Kirkman noting he has a rough plan that extends even further, there’s one baddie in particular that could play a big role.
InvincibleHQ tweeted out a clip of Kirkman talking about what viewers should expect from future seasons of the animated series. In particular, the tweet focused on the fact that Invincible might be getting way more dimensions. You can check out the clip, which features Kirkman mentioning Angstrom Levy directly, below.
In the comics, Angstrom Levy is a man with the ability to travel to alternate realities. Although little is known about when and how he gains these powers, he blames Invincible for becoming disfigured and emerges as a significant recurring threat to the character. He has kidnapped Mark’s mother and younger brother, and he’s used his powers to send Mark to a number of alternate realities, including an encounter with Spider-Man in a crossover saga. Levy also emerges at a later point with the plan of recruiting evil versions of Invincible from other realities to damage Mark’s public image.
It’s hard to tell, at this point, which story Kirkman and his collaborators hope to tell when they adapt Levy for the coming seasons of Invincible. Still, given how Kirkman has spoken openly about the value of diverging from the source material, it’s possible that Levy isn’t wholly antagonistic at first. Perhaps he can even show Mark a dimension where Omni-Man never took such a horrifically villainous turn, instead remaining as a devoted dad and husband. Or, alternatively, it could be the case that the character will be the next big villain for seasons to come. Still, regardless of which direction Invincible goes in, it’s clear that Angstrom Levy will have a key part to play in what comes next.
