The first look at Amazon's animated Invincible TV series reveals comic accurate character designs for the main cast. Robert Kirkman's acclaimed Image Comics series is nearing the launch of its first adaptation. While a live-action movie is in the works, Kirkman is also spearheading an animated TV show based on Invincible for Amazon Prime Video. The project was announced in 2018 but casting announcements are still being made, with it most recently being revealed that Invincibles Guardians of the Globe are being voiced by several alums from The Walking Dead, another Kirkman series.

Even though Invincible has been in the works for almost two years, fans of the comic have yet to see anything from the series. Kirkman has continued to tease a release date and a trailer for the show, but so far neither announcement has come. This has meant there is no promotion for Invincible outside of who has joined Steven Yeun and J.K. Simmons, who play Invincible and his alien father Omni-Man respectively, as members of the voice cast. Thankfully, the first look at Invincible has finally arrived.

As part of Free Comic Book Day, a special Invincible comic book hit store shelves with preview images of the character designs for the show. The art is done by Cory Walker, the Lead Character Designer for the show and co-creator of the comics, and was released online by IGN. As evident in the designs below, Walker is sticking extremely close to what he and artist Ryan Ottely put together for the comic originally.

This first look at Invincible gives a clear look at the comic accurate designs for the main cast members. Simmons and Yeun's characters are first up on the lineup, followed by Atom Eve (Gillian Jacobs), Robot (Zachary Quinto), Rex Splode (Jason Mantzoukas), Dupli-Kate (Melise), Debbie (Sandra Oh), and Cecil Steadman (Walton Goggins). Since the comic accurate looks shouldn't be a surprise given Kirkman and Walker's involvement, the biggest takeaway from the art is a glimpse at the animation style the series will use.

With only a few character designs revealed so far, there are still a lot of designs that we've yet to see. But, based on this first look, fans of the comics should expect that Invincible will keep the rest of its characters' looks similarly faithful to their comic counterparts. Hopefully, it won't be too much longer before a better look at Invincible arrives. If the series is going to begin streaming sometime in 2020, a trailer would be a welcomed piece of marketing at this point. Seeing the character designs is one thing, but it'll be even better to see them in motion and get a better understanding of how Invincible will look.
