My Valentine, the latest installment of Hulu’s Into the Dark anthology horror series tells a gripping story of stolen identity, but it also features an extremely surprising connection to a previous entry in the series.
Hulu has found great success by teaming up with Blumhouse TV for their seasonal horror anthology series, Into the Dark. Now in its second season, each episode turns a monthly holiday into a new occasion for terror in inspired ways. Into the Dark has turned into a great platform for not just the actors involved, but also for burgeoning horror filmmakers. Many rising stars in the genre like Sophia Takal and Chelsea Stardust were given major opportunities from the series. If nothing else, Into the Dark turns out a new horror film each and every month, which is a wonderful perk for Hulu subscribers.
This month’s installment once again tackles Valentine’s Day, but Maggie Levin’s My Valentine presents a very human, emotional story that pulls many of its characters and events from reality. My Valentine looks at a jilted pop star who finds her music and image being repurposed and stolen by her former manager and boyfriend and applied to his latest conquest. As these individuals are trapped together in close quarters, they’re all forced to reckon with the past, their toxic histories together, and where the truth really lies. My Valentine crafts a very intimate, grounded horror story, but one of the biggest highlights in the entry is a major surprise that happens during the end credits.
Pooka From Into The Dark’s Season 1 Christmas Episode Appears In A Mid-Credits Scene
One of the fun aspects throughout My Valentine is how Maggie Levin expertly creates glitzy pop music videos for the hit numbers from Valentine (Britt Baron) and Trezzure’s (Anna Lore) discographies. The Into the Dark installment even concludes with one of these over the top music videos that reiterates the messages of the film, but also doubles as a celebratory video over wrapping production. The video highlights the cast of My Valentine having lots of fun, but there’s a legitimate surprise when Pooka appears for a few seconds and says, “Hi, friends!” to the audience.
Pooka was heavily featured in Nacho Vigalondo’s Christmas entry from Into the Dark’s first season. In spite of how that story associates Pooka with Christmas, he’s given a minor Valentine’s Day makeover here as flaming hearts radiate from his eyes. This appearance from Pooka doesn’t amount to more than a fun Easter Egg for Into the Dark’s dedicated fans. However, it does technically mark the first official explicit crossover between Into the Dark stories. Into the Dark’s stories aren’t expected to take place in one big, connected universe, but fun nods like this might mean that the series is starting to return to old characters.
