AMC series Into the Badlands has added Sherman Augustus, Babou Ceesay, Ella-Rae Smith, Dean-Charles Chapman and Lewis Tan to the cast for its third season. Of the five, only Augustus has previously appeared on the series.
Set in a post-apocalyptic world, martial arts drama series Into the Badlands was developed by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. The protagonist of the series is a warrior named Sunny (Daniel Wu) who strives to protect M.K. (Aramis Knight), a boy with a mysterious, deadly power. The two must struggle to survive in a place filled with scheming barons fighting for control of the Badlands. The show first aired in November 2015 with a six-episode first season, which was followed by a ten-episode second season. The third season will be the series' longest yet, with 16 episodes.
Deadline reports that Sherman Augustus, Babou Cessay, and Ella-Rae Smith have signed on as series regulars. Game of Thrones actor Dean-Charles Chapman and Lewis Tan have been tapped for recurring roles. Augustus will return as season 2 character Nathaniel Moon, a Clipper whose history of killing has ruined his life. With killing being the only thing he had left to live for, he challenged Sunny to a duel, but was defeated. As a result, he lost his hand. In season 3, Moon's desire for vengeance against Sunny will lead him to aid the Widow (Emily Beecham) in her war against Baron Chau (Eleanor Matsuura).
Guerilla actor Babou Ceesay will play the role of Pilgrim, a "zealous warlord who is on a quest to recover a mysterious artifact from Azra that could tip the balance of power in the Badlands."
Chapman and Smith will play teenagers Castor and Nix respectively, who Pilgrim loves as if they were his own children, though the two secretly use their dark abilities to manipulate him.
Lewis Tan will play Gaius Chau, the brother of Baron Chau. He was imprisoned by his sister for liberating her cog slaves. The character will become a reluctant player in Baron Chau's war with the Widow. Tan, who appeared on Iron Fist as Zhou Cheng, already has a background in martial arts.
Last month, it was reported that Rosewood and Orange is the New Black actress Lorraine Toussaint will also be joining the show a series regular in season 3. The new characters will help fill in the gaps in the cast, following the deaths of two series regulars, Veil (Madeleine Mantock) and Quinn (Martin Csoskas) in season 2. Veil, Sunny's love interest and the mother of his child, killed both herself and Quinn, the show's main antagonist, in the Into the Badlands season 2 finale.
Into the Badlands season 3 premieres in 2018 on ABC.
