Lestat de Lioncourt was the one who made the story of Interview with the Vampire possible as he turned Louis de Pointe du Lac into a vampire, but what happened to him after the events of the movie? Anne Rice’s 1976 novel Interview with the Vampire made the jump to the big screen in 1994, with Neil Jordan as director and Brad Pitt as Louis, a young man who after the death of his wife and unborn child, was turned into a vampire by Lestat (Tom Cruise).

Louis struggled to adapt to his new eternal life, while Lestat had lost all his humanity and actually enjoyed hunting and killing humans. Still, the two ended up living and traveling together, more so after Louis fed on a dying girl, Claudia (Kirsten Dunst), who Lestat ultimately turned into a vampire as well. Lestat’s views kept on clashing with those of Louis and Claudia, with the latter attempting to kill him. Lestat returned at the end of Interview with the Vampire, where he attacked reporter Daniel Molloy (Christian Slater) after his meeting with Louis and gave him “the choice that he never had”. After that, it’s unknown if Lestat turned Molloy into a vampire or if he found a new companion somewhere else, but that wasn’t the end of Lestat’s story.

Interview with the Vampire is the first book in Anne Rice’s The Vampire Chronicles, and was followed by The Vampire Lestat in 1985. Since then, Lestat has appeared in most novels of the series, of which some have explored his life after the events of the first book and thus the movie, in a way. After reading Interview with the Vampire, Lestat took charge of a band and renamed it “The Vampire Lestat”. The band was a big success, and he reunited with Louis before a concert in San Francisco. Louis begged him to not go ahead with the concert as Lestat had already angered many vampires by revealing their existence to the world, but he didn’t listen. At the end of the concert, vampires were attacked and killed by an unseen force, and Louis and Lestat were saved by Gabrielle (Lestat’s mother, who he turned into a vampire as well). As they left the place, they were attacked by a group of vampires, but they ended up being burned by the same unseen force.

After that, Lestat got involved in all types of trouble, such as Akasha’s plans of killing almost the entire male population, reunited with Louis a couple more times, and eventually began to feel lonely, to the point where he contemplated killing himself. However, his attempts were unsuccessful, and he was later approached by a man named Raglan James, who told him about body switching. Lestat ended up switching bodies with him, which he found fascinating at first as it was a human body, but he then discovered that the body was ill and very close to death. He regained his body thanks to David Talbot, but Raglan took possession of Talbot’s body.

Lestat’s life continued to be full of problems and conflicts with other vampires and even demons and witches. Although Lestat is known for his arrogance, boldness, and lack of empathy, he’s not incapable of love and has been portrayed as a bisexual character, having had both female and male lovers throughout the books (and both as a mortal and vampire). After Interview with the Vampire, Lestat is shown as less of a villain and a monster, and more as a deeply troubled soul doing his best to adapt to the ever-changing world, though he still lacks humanity, especially when compared to Louis.
