Romantic comedies may be one of the more divisive genres among movie fans out there. Even so, it's hard to argue with writer/director Nancy Meyers' track record over the past few decades.
Since the 1980s, Meyers has brought several hits to the screen as a writer and then later as a director as well. Her filmography - which includes The Parent Trap, What Women Want, Something's Gotta Give and The Holiday - is perhaps one of the most consistently successful within the genre. Now we have our first look at her newest release with the first trailer for The Intern (see above).
In the film, Anne Hathaway plays the young founder of a fashion website who takes on a "senior intern" (Robert De Niro) to help in the office. Before long, the pair begins to bond, and their friendship could have a lasting impact on both their lives as well as how the business is run. Nat Wolff (The Fault in Our Stars) and Rene Russo (Nightcrawler) costar in The Intern, which is both written and directed by Meyers.
The Intern looks like it will sidestep the romantic themes of Meyers' previous work, but it does appear to retain a similar sentimental tone and idealistic worldview. The filmmaker does have a very specific voice (one that clearly resonates with some audiences), and The Intern looks like it will embrace that. However, the trailer itself does present a certain narrative predictability inherent in its setup, as most comedies do.
That being said, there's every chance that Hathaway and De Niro - both Oscar-winning actors - will be able to elevate the flawed nature of the genre and make this a fun cinematic experience for people looking for something a bit lighter at the box office this fall. Notably, the last time Hathaway starred in a comedy set in the fashion world, the result was the monster hit The Devil Wears Prada. So The Intern could easily become a sleeper hit of sorts.
The Intern hits theaters on September 25, 2015.
