How does The Divergent Series: Insurgent movie differ from the book it’s based on? Lionsgate’s Divergent movie trilogy is based on the YA book series of the same name by Veronica Roth. Both the books and movies are set in a post-apocalyptic dystopian Chicago divided into five main factions based around certain virtues; Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Dauntless and Erudite which represent selflessness, peace, honesty, bravery and intellect respectively. The series follows Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley) who discovers she is Divergent – a person that doesn’t fit into any one faction and poses a threat to the existing order because of their ability to think independently.

The first movie was released in 2014 and was swiftly followed by sequel The Divergent Series: Insurgent the following year. While Shailene Woodley and co-stars including Theo James and Miles Teller returned for the sequel, while original director Neil Burger handed over the reins to Robert Schwentke. A different writing team came on board too with Brian Duffield, Akiva Goldman and Mark Bomback responsible for translating Roth’s second Divergent book for the big screen.

With any book-to-screen adaptation there are bound to be a few changes and The Divergent Series: Insurgent featured some pretty big differences from its source material. The bare bones of the plot are the same, with Tris Prior and her allies going up against power-hungry Erudite leader Jeanine Matthews (Kate Winslet) and uncovering a major secret about their society, but the movie goes about it a different way to the book. One of the biggest differences is the movie introduced a mysterious box that could only be opened by a Divergent able pass a series of simulations, and once activated revealed Chicago’s faction system is an experiment and that a world exists beyond the city walls. In the book, there is no box but rather a hard drive and Jeanine is already aware of the secret it holds.

Another difference between The Divergent Series: Insurgent and the book is there’s a device that detects how divergent individuals are which leads to the discovery Tris is 100% Divergent and thus possesses the traits of all five factions. In the Insurgent book, Tris also has a fear of guns resulting from lingering guilt over having to shoot her friend Will (Ben Lloyd-Hughes) dead in the first movie, although in the sequel she’s pretty trigger-happy.

Some characters from the book didn’t make it into The Divergent Series: Insurgent, while others received more prominent or diminished roles. Dauntless faction members Zeke and Shauna don’t appear and neither do Erudite defectors Cara and Fernando. Marcus Eaton (Ray Stevenson) – an Abnegation council member and father of Tris’ love interest Four (Theo James) – plays a less significant role in the movie alongside other characters including Uriah (Keiynan Lonsdale), Lynn (Rosa Salazar), Marlene (Suki Waterhouse) and Johanna (Octavia Spencer), while Jeanine plays a noticeably bigger role.

The ending of The Divergent Series: Insurgent differs from the book too. In the novel, Jeanine is killed after being stabbed in the stomach by Tori Wu (Maggie Q) while in the film she’s shot in the head by Factionless leader and Four’s mother Evelyn (Naomi Watts). Finally, when the citizens of Chicago find out the faction system is an experiment they rush towards the city walls to what they presume is freedom, while in the book the big reveal causes everyone to freak out instead.
