Adding pronouns is one of the many ways people can customize their Instagram profiles. This makes it easy for others to see how someone prefers being referred to, helping make the platform more inclusive for everyone regardless of how they identify.

With around 1 billion people logging on to Instagram every month, it's safe to say that the app has many different people using it. These are all users with different backgrounds, whether it be differences with their skin color, education, job profession, gender identity, etc., etc. It's up to Instagram to make sure everyone feels welcome on the platform regardless of where they come from, and while no social media app is perfect in this regard, Instagram has made good progress here.

A prime example of this is the ability to add pronouns to an Instagram profile. To get started, open the Instagram app and tap the profile icon on the bottom navigation bar (it's the one on the far right). From here, tap 'Edit Profile,' tap 'Pronouns,' and then start typing in the pronouns that should appear on the profile. Instagram allows users to add up to 4 pronouns to their profile, with users able to edit/remove them at any time. There's also a toggle that lets users only show their pronouns to their followers, which could be handy for those concerned about their privacy. After someone adds their desired pronouns, just tap the 'Done' button in the top-right of the screen to save. These instructions apply to the Instagram app on Android and iOS.

Instagram Supports A Wide Variety Of Pronouns

Adding pronouns to an Instagram profile

While Instagram isn't the first social media app to have pronouns on profiles, it does appear to support a much wider array of them than some other applications. More common pronouns like he/him, she/her, and they/them are here, but Instagram didn't stop there. Users can also find pronouns such as xe/xem, ze/zir, ey/em, and others. Some pronouns like it/its aren't present, nor are custom pronouns, but this is still much better than a lot of other apps. It's also possible Instagram could add additional options down the road, which will hopefully make sure no one feels left out.

Once pronouns are added to an Instagram account, they appear right next to a person's name in a slightly different font color — making it easy for them to stick out. Users are still welcome to manually add pronouns to their bio if they'd like, but using the pronoun feature does help them to be more clearly visible for everyone to see.
